Radio Towers....height?

Recommended Posts

I have never done a base jump before, but i have watched numerous videos and I keep wondering how tall, on average, those radio towers are? It seems like a pretty long free fall for a base jump! :) I watched the Mario Pardo base jump here on dropzone.com and i really am curious as to how tall it is! Thanks.

Towers vary widely in height.
I have seen tower structures as low as 30 feet. FAA regulations prohibit building towers over 2000' in the USA. In general, towers outside the USA are lower than US towers. I've heard a rumor that back during the cold war, the Soviets built a monster tower (4000' or something) in Poland, but supposedly it has been demolished.
Cliffs are definitely the tallest objects. Have a look at this movie, to see what I mean (it's big, so consider downloading, rather than streaming).

Hmm, I just watched that first video.
This one is probably better for seeing the altitude.
Both videos are from this page.

Yes, it "WAS"... It collapsed about 11 years ago during maintenance. They said the noise was so loud when it hit the ground that all the windows in the houses in a close range were blown to pieces by the sonic wave...:o Someone also said the tip of the antenna reached the speed of sound when collapsing...:o

I am Polish and was in Poland at that time. It was pretty famous at that time... Right now, I live in North Dakota, close to the current highest structure (a tower close to Fargo, over 2,000ft tall).

actually the one in poland was only 2120'

It was the tallest/highest structure/thing ever erected by a human being (according to the Guinness Book of Records).

Do people make jumps off the Fargo tower? Or is it pretty heavily watched?

I am not sure... I am couple hours away from it.:|

It might be better if we stopped discussing actual objects, and their locations. See my Naming Names post for my reasoning on this.
Thanks!

Not sure what you mean as you seem to be contradicting yourself.

As Tom said we can build towers in the US up to 2000 ft although apparently there are some exceptions? I live in the midwest and while not all that common, there are 2000 foot towers around. We have a cluster of them in one paticular location along with some lower (1600 ft) ones.

That spot isn't bad at all, the winds were strong and that was the issue! It was just on the downwind side.

Luke,

If you'd like to have a little fun in your own backyard try this.

Go down to your nearest general aviation airport and purchase a sectional map. These charts cover a large area and have all major towers marked with height in both AGL and MSL. These are neat little treasure maps to towers but remember you are only looking and not jumping. (Yet.)

There’s a lot more you need to know, and accept, about towers before you ever go near one.

I also posted about a week ago about some interesting web sites that have searchable databases on tower heights.
