stevebabin 0 #1 May 19, 2003 I am getting ready to buy my first Base canopy and was interested in hearing what the experienced people would recommend. I've read Tom Aiellos article(thanks again, Tom) and read the reviews on BLINCs website. I'll have a Wizard from Vertigo to put it in. Any recommendations? hookitt 1 #2 May 19, 2003 Will you be at a Legal span in the Potato state this coming weekend? There will be some Demo canopies to try out. TimMy grammar sometimes resembles that of magnetic refrigerator poetry... Ghetto
stevebabin 0 #3 May 19, 2003 Unfortunately, no. Sounds like a good idea, though. Steve"Science, logic and reason will fly you to the moon. Religion will fly you into buildings." "Because figuring things out is always better than making shit up."
mac266 0 #4 May 19, 2003 Quote I'll have a Wizard from Vertigo to put it in. Why not a Dagger from Vertigo??? I fly a Dagger - and Im very happy with it!
stevebabin 0 #5 May 20, 2003 The Dagger is one that I am considering. What do you like best/least about it? How does it compare to other base canopies that you've jumped? Thanks for the input! mac266 0 #6 May 20, 2003 the only negative thought i have with my canopy is that in real tight areas its inherrent "sportyness" takes alot of flying - the dagger seems to fly quite quickly. It took some testing in getting my control lines to the optium length to help me be able to fly alot slower - but after my testing and my thoughts and some talking with J&M - they now reduce the control line length on the dagger.............. obviously after their own testing! Hope this helps Michael
andy2 0 #7 May 20, 2003 do you think because of its inherent sportiness the dagger is not a good choice for someone's first BASE canopy? --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm...
stevebabin 0 #8 May 20, 2003 I'm OK with "Sporty", and my wing loading will be light(around .7) so this may work for me. Thanks again for the response! Faber 0 #9 May 20, 2003 "sporty" and "this may work to me"aint the words you want in BASE. Theres a reason we say bigger is better And things MUST work and not MAY work.. Stay safe Stefan Faber
stevebabin 0 #10 May 20, 2003 I am not taking the issue of wingloading lightly(no pun intended) I understand its place in the equation. After much forethought and research, I feel a .7 wingloading is a good place to start. Do you have any recommendations on canopies?"Science, logic and reason will fly you to the moon. burn 0 #11 May 20, 2003 Quote Why not a Dagger from Vertigo??? Compared to other base canopies they open very bad. The only people happy with Dagger are those that have not owned other modern base canopies and don't know any better.
Faber 0 #12 May 20, 2003 Quote Do you have any recommendations on canopies? While im a newbie and only have tryed Fox i would be the wrong guy to recomend anything. But after what Mac says"Dagger is a sporty"then i would migth concider another one.But really.. i think you´ll need in put from some of thouse who have way more experience than i have.Thouse would be the rigth once to tell you. I could easily be wrong(but if if should recomend, and ofcourse only under pressure, then i would say Fox while its the only one i have tryed) Stay safe Stefan Faber
mac266 0 #13 May 20, 2003 Quote Compared to other base canopies they open very bad. In what way in your opinion? I would be interested in your thoughts. I feel the onheading performance is good - and from video I believe them to pressurise quicker than some other (obviously Unvented) canopies. oh and PS) your right it is my first BASE canopy! but hell - its all a big learning curve! I load mine at 0.68 and its "sportyness" meant there was no fucking way i was trying to land it into tight areas with almost no room for error until i had sorted out the control line lengths and got used to the way it flies! I am now happy I have landed it in some "Nice UK Tight spots!" Be Safe....................
DaveO 0 #15 May 21, 2003 I own two Fox V-tecs which I absolutely love and would recommend to anyone. I have a Flik on the way. I have never jumped a Flik but my buddy has one and he loves it. The truth be told I have seen great openings and landings on Foxes,Mojos,Fliks,Blackjacks,Aces,Daggers,Ravens, and Cruiselites. I have also seen people bust there ass with all of these canopies. Each canopy has it's own characteristics. But I feel the canopy pilot is the biggest factor. Do your research and talk to local jumpers. See what they jump and what they like. Don't rush into buying a canopy you might not like. This is just my opinion."When it comes to BASE, I'll never give advice, only my opinion"
base428 1 #16 May 21, 2003 somebody should start a poll on the canopy they think is best for BASE. i always wait a year or two to buy the new stuff. by then, all the bugs are worked out. i'm not into the "crash test dummy" jumps..... i almost bought a Nova skydiving canopy, for those of you who were jumping in the early 90's. lesson learned. TomAiello 26 #17 May 21, 2003 Quotesomebody should start a poll on the canopy they think is best for BASE. Probably best to start that over at BLiNC, though, since the level of experience there is significantly higher. I think I've seen it go by on that board. Let me see if I can find it. Edit: I found the old thread, but all the votes had somehow been cleared out. So, I've started a new poll at BLiNC.-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
