WrongWay 0 #1 November 6, 2003 I'm an experienced skydiver who wants to take up BASE, and I'm looking for a mentor/BASE buddy to show me the ropes. Is anybody in Ohio??? Treejumps 0 #2 November 6, 2003 There are plenty of BASE's in OH, but taking out a BASE on-line personal ad is not much of a commitment to find people and learn base. Probably want to find a base jumper at your DZ. If not, someone at your DZ must know someone. Did you just wake up today and decide you want to jump off of things, or have you read the hundreds of BASE documents that are on line all over the web? Call PARA-CARE. 800-Safe-ALT. They get you back to a safe altitude before it's too late.
WrongWay 0 #3 November 6, 2003 I have read a ton of things online, and I plan on taking a First BASE course this winter. No I didn't just wake up and say "I wanna base jump today!!!". I don't know of any people on or around my DZ who BASE, I've already looked into it. So yes, I'm really interested in doing it safely and with training, and no, I'm not some random schmuck who just buys a base rig, climbs an antenna and jumps. So, once again, any guys around here?? Edited to add: By the way, we both know that reading things and doing them are two totally different things. Documents don't make safety, personal training does. PhreeZone 20 #4 November 6, 2003 You did'nt look too hard on the DZ since I know of 4 jumpers off the top of my head that BASE or could get you in direct contact with a large group of BASE jumpers. Improve your accuracy under a skydiving canopy before you go to the BASE realm. Have you seriously done all the things that BR and CR have on thier websites for canopy drills? I'm yet to see you out with a large canopy trying to fly it back wards and doing the rest of the drills. Some jumpers will take you more seriously when you actually seek out the skills in a safe realm then seek out the knowledge to BASE. I'm yet to see you seriously trying to improve your canopy skills, you seem more interested in getting your AD rating then in how to BASE. So your not still planning on buying a rig soon before attending a FBC are you? A canopy and a skydiving rig to jump it in would be a good idea, but you have'nt even done the canopy drills yet accourding to what I've been watching.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
WrongWay 0 #5 November 6, 2003 No I haven't, as I haven't been out to the DZ since Halloween and even then, I've been tight on cash, renting gear has been out of the question. Second, I'd want to at least rent BASE gear for the FBC, converted skydiving rig doesn't sound too tempting. Third, who does BASE at home? I've looked around, but apparently not in the right places. Is there anything else you'd like to add Erk?? Wrong Way D #27371 Mal Manera Rodriguez Cajun Chicken Ø Hellfish #451 The wiser wolf prevails.
Treejumps 0 #6 November 6, 2003 If you are planning on a FJC thats a good thing. As Phree has said, work on your canopy skiils. There are jumpers in your back yard, so I'm not sure why you can't find them. Perhaps a little more searching is in order. This isn't one of those things were "when the student is ready the master appears". Have you ground crewed, or offered to ground crew? Did you go to BD? You are asking complete strangers on the net to take responsibilty for your life, and to endanger themselves in the process. Perhaps a teenie little bit more work on your part. Maybe offering ground crew instead of asking for a mentor. Bribes of alchohol & other goodies go a long way too. Keep up the hard work!
PhreeZone 20 #7 November 7, 2003 Using converted skydiving gear for BASE is a bad idea, but its a great idea to get something like a Flik or Troll or an actual BASE canopy and get some experience flying the canopy before you throw your self off a 485 foot bridge. Hop and pops all winter are a good time for that... It took me months of creating contacts at the local DZ's that would let me talk to them about my desire and what I should improve. The one that would have became my mentor and I eventually came to the the decision together that I was'nt mature enough of a jumper to BASE. With my decision making processes I'd be too easily pressured into making risky jumps and that its in my best interets to work out those issues before seriously looking at BASE again if I ever do. Some of those people still BASE and some don't. How did you approach people about BASE? That might have a lot to do with a lack of jumpers showing up... There are 2 or 3 staff that BASE (2 were at the Halloween party), I'd suggest actually getting to know people and sitting around talking to them before saying that no one BASE's. They just don't brag about it or flaunt it (Thats the way it should be IMHO)... I'll point a few people out to you next time at the DZ, but it just seems to me you have'nt put that much effort into this so far. As for using the student gear, talk to Jim about being on the accuracy team for next year and I think you might be surprized the responce the DZ has. Plus it would teach you a lot of skills that you won't learn on that Sabre2.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
WrongWay 0 #8 November 7, 2003 Thanks for the advice, guys. Oh, and Phree, taking the criticism of the "mentor" and not doing something, you have no idea how much respect you just gained from me. I'll hold off for a while, work on some big canopy stuff. Thanks again. Wrong Way D #27371 Mal Manera Rodriguez Cajun Chicken Ø Hellfish #451 The wiser wolf prevails. sum1sneaky 0 #9 November 7, 2003 I always get all worked up when I hear people complain about being poor and don't enumerate on what they've been doing to change their status... it should just encourage resourcefulness! Here are a few tips learned from experience: #1 You eat a lot more money than you think! If you really want something, then it's time to act like it! Buck up and buy a 30 lb. bag of beans and eat them for every meal. Get creative and have em over rice or generic ramen. If you're spending more than $10/week on food - you're needlessly spending valuable money that would last longer in the form of your first rig. Rig's last longer than expensive tastes - millions of people eat cheaply - you can too. #2 Look into wackin off for cash - I know in my area they pay $375/week. You'll have to have 3 generations of medical history, often times be taller than 6ft., have a college degree, and have swimmers that wake up after the deep freeze. Even if they reject your little boys, it's worth a try and some embarrassment if you get selected! #3 Find a plasma center that will pay you for "donating" your blood plasma. I made 178 plasma donations before I saved enough for my first rig - but I did it. And I didn't go around whining about how I'd really like to start if I only had some money #4 Sell stuff you don't use... I'm sure you've got something worth sum bucks that is less important than BASE - get rid of it! #5 Move out of your house and into your car - it will help when you're out ground-crewing for people at 4am that you can park and crash where ever you want. #6 Loose the girlfriend if she's not paying all your bills - she's too expensive and there's always at least some pleasure in #2! #7 Get another job! If you're not working more than 14 hours per day, you're wasting time you could be earning money! If you can't take such long hours, try altering your sleep cycle. If you sleep twice or three times a day you'll need less total sleep... If you can sleep once every 4 hours for 40 minutes you'll need the least and feel great! I made 38,000 in 3 months once doing just this! If you can't fall asleep fast enough, learn self-hypnosis - it will help with your composure at the exit point as well! Tip: This works well with #5! Not everyone cries when they don't have money, start learning to be one of them, and you'll probably find a mentor. Okay, enough flaming... really all I'm saying is that if you want to get into base, show some dedication and all us assholes will nicen up - maybe. sum1
PhreeZone 20 #10 November 7, 2003 As one BASE jumper told me on money issues: If your car is worth more then the cost of a new rig and a tank of gas its too expensive and needs sold to make room for a new rig. Personally the one thing that scares me is reading about skydivers that are wanting to get into BASE since they don't have the money to skydive anymore. I've always heard BASE can be more expensive the skydiving after you have to pay fines or lawyer costs, gass to get to sites all over no where, time off work since you had to climb at Sunrise and got to work a few hours late, and hospital bills when you get hurt. WW, start to do some CRW with me and you'll be amazed at how your canopy skills improve. Why do you think I got started on CRW?Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com

cesslon 0 #13 November 7, 2003 hahaha that posts 2 or 3 posts up was a classic with the "whacking for cash" bit how many times a week must 1 whack to earn 375$ ? also whats involved in plasma donations and what does it pay thanx

hookitt 1 #15 November 7, 2003 Damn Sneak... where were you when I started? Great tips. I'll begin using some of them when I wake up tomorrow. There's some serious catching up to do. I have 3 rigs, I'll sell one to make money so I can jump more ... no, I have three rigs so I can jump more... Shit ... I'm confused by #4 Whackin off is easy but I'm short with out a college degree. I suppose that will only go along with #6 or it can stand alone on it's own merit. This is gonna be tough. Wrongway.. you're screwed man. sum1sneaky 0 #20 November 7, 2003 yeah hookit, i probably wasn't even born when you started - but then I bet you weren't using your lack of money as an excuse for not putting in effort to learn things either. I never understood that college degree requirement either... WTF? most people with college degrees don't need to wack off for cash. It's all a popularity contest in their little book of contestants. Personally, I think I'm glad I didn't fit their requirements... don't know if it would be weird to have a mini-me running around somewhere. sneak
