freefal 0 #1 December 9, 2003 Forgive me if I seem a bit skeptical about this, but while surfing around Ebay I saw this "skydiving parachute" for sale (see attached link) and it just seemed a little fishy. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=310&item=3643369513[url] There's no mention of what canopy is inside (if there even is one) and it looks like the seller just copied the description from CR's website. The shrivel flap tuck tab isn't even tucked in in the pictures. If this was legitimate, I can only assume this person would have tried to sell this on BLiNC or DZ.com. I just wanted to share this incase anyone has had a rig like this stolen recently. BASE 837 "Ignorance is bliss" and "Patience is a virtue"... So if you're stupid and don't mind waiting around for a while, I guess you can have a pretty good life!
The111 1 #2 December 9, 2003 Check the guy's other auctions, there is a skydiving rig too, made by "PARAFUN" (?) Both of these auctions scream stolen. This is the second thing today that has pissed me off.www.WingsuitPhotos.com
bps 0 #3 December 9, 2003 Hello -- I recognize that rig from a trip to the potatoe State 2 1/2 years ago. (I have an incredibly good memory) It belongs/belonged to Buddman. Also confirmed by the embroidery on the mud-flaps. I'll research some old posts and find Budd's contact info...if anyone knows his contact info off-hand, beat me to it and drop him a line. Maybe he sold it to someone else and they had it stolen...either way, it sounds like it's hot, especially with the description of "Used Perigee II Skydiving Parachute for sale, no reserve" Hmmm... catfishhunter 2 #4 December 9, 2003 Check the seller. They are a pawn shop. The111 1 #5 December 9, 2003 Worth noting - the seller is apparently a pawn shop. If that's the case, and the item is stolen, it's unlikely they stole it themselves, or have access to the person who sold it to them. I wonder what the course of action is in cases like this? For example, I find my stolen TV for sale in a pawn shop. I can't just take it back, but I'm not paying for it either. I'm wondering if the law intervenes somehow, but even if that is the case, I doubt it's the same story when the item is a BASE rig.www.WingsuitPhotos.com
The111 1 #6 December 9, 2003 QuoteLooks like someone pawned their gear and never came back with the money to get it back I'll admit I've never dealt with a pawn shop before so I don't know... but are you implying that people regularly sell something to a pawn shop and buy it back themselves? For temporary cash or something?www.WingsuitPhotos.com
catfishhunter 2 #7 December 9, 2003 If a police report was filed, the Police will take your property back and will cost you nothing ( I know this from personal experiance) The person who stole the property will be charged with theft (from you)and theft by deception(for taking the money from the pawn shop) The pawn shop will be SOL until the perp. is found guilty and ordered to pay restitution. base428 1 #8 December 9, 2003 I've emailed Buddman about this rig. Yes, you can sell your "stuff" to a pawn shop and then buy it back for a small fee. If you don't buy it back, then the pawn shop will sell it. This may or may not be the case here. Buddman will let us know what the deal is.(c)2010 Vertical Visions. vid666 0 #9 December 9, 2003 if the police report was filed in the same city ( i think it doesn't go outside the locale ), the pawn shop owners will be charged with receiving stolen property...
indyz 1 #10 December 9, 2003 QuoteI'll admit I've never dealt with a pawn shop before so I don't know... but are you implying that people regularly sell something to a pawn shop and buy it back themselves? For temporary cash or something? That's the way most pawn shops work. The money they give you is a loan, and the item you give them is collateral. If you can pay back the money plus interest within a certain period, you get the item back. Otherwise they turn around and sell it. Most people who pawn things don't plan on paying the money back, they are just using the pawn shop to convert their item into cash (and usually taking a huge loss in the process). riggersam 1 #11 December 9, 2003 I just got off the phone with Buddman. He said it was stolen while it was in another family member's possession. He looked up the rig on Ebay while I was on the phone, so hopefully it gets resolved from here. Mark BASE
catfishhunter 2 #12 December 9, 2003 he needs to contact ebay as well as the seller and let them know the auction contains stolen property. He will also need a police report to get his stuff back. If he never filed one he just may be SOL. Cops arn't to keen on people saying oh bye the way thats my stuff and it was stolen way back when I just never got around to reporting it until I found it. The111 1 #14 December 9, 2003 Wow, this makes me happy but I hope that he can still get it back, if that bit about the police report is true and he didn't file one (I don't know if he did)...www.WingsuitPhotos.com
kitof1976 0 #15 December 9, 2003 OK Now I feel like a real fucking idiot because I am currently the high bidder on this base rig sold on Ebay... I am glad I came accross this thread!!! If I can help Buddman to recover his gear in anyways let me know!! This is really bad karma to bid on someone else's stolen rig!!! Shit!!!! "We see the world just the way we are... catfishhunter 2 #16 December 9, 2003 He might still be able to get it back if he didn't file a report in a timely manner but it will be a HUGE headache and LONG process if he gets it back at all. If he has all the docs for the gear (if it was his parachute rig the reserve repack card will help since the packer will have records as well) Just will make for allot less trouble if he reported it MAKE EVERY DAY COUNT Life is Short and we never know how long we are going to have. BaseDevil 0 #19 December 9, 2003 Yep It's my gear 3 B.A.S.E. rigs & a skydiving rig & yes I will get it all back. They were stolen out of my step son's van while he was at a horse farm in Boyton Beach FL. The pawn shop wants 650 for them (It's what they payed out for them) I'm concidering paying them just to get it back quick. I'll just look at as a finder's fee because I'm in upstate NY & they are in Miami FL A police report was filed but we didn't get a copy I really don't want to go thru the b/s nessicary to get them back for nothing. Besides it's the step son who is gonna pay the 650. We could just call it a stupid tax thanks all Buddman

kitof1976 0 #21 December 9, 2003 Glad you will get your gear back! I would have hated buying a rig on Ebay ant then get my head bashed in by someone who recogized the gear as stolen property! "We see the world just the way we are...
catfishhunter 2 #22 December 9, 2003 Incase you all didn't know there where two rigs as he stated. That was why I said Quote...if it was his parachute rig the reserve repack card will help since the packer will have records as well... was reffering to the second rig they had listed along with the base rig. which it turns out was his also MAKE EVERY DAY COUNT Life is Short and we never know how long we are going to have.
