Zennie 0 #4 May 5, 2004 Yep. I'm very up-front about it. I figure if they know in advance there won't be any surprises if I get injured/busted. Nobody gives me a hard time, though several think I'm slightly crazy. - Z "Always be yourself... unless you suck." - Joss Whedon
evilivan 0 #5 May 5, 2004 Where is the yes/no answer? My current employer, yes, my new employer (I start this Monday), no - they asked if I would stop skydiving at the "determine how much money I am getting" stage and weren't too happy with the response..... (The fact that I'll be showing up with a broken leg on Monday..... well, thats another story )"If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probably haven't understood the seriousness of the situation." LouYoung 0 #6 May 5, 2004 What do you do for a living? And what does your salary have to do with skydiving or BASE (beside not being able to afford tickets/gear)?
evilivan 0 #7 May 5, 2004 I work in the TV (no, not trannies ) industry in the UK. I've been employed for a pretty big project and they are concerned that they might lose me... I think. They don't really undestand of course. Perceived risk etc etc"If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probably haven't understood the seriousness of the situation." Joris 0 #8 May 6, 2004 Yep! Me and one of our engineers are both jumping! Our production employees even get familiar with the kind of gear we use, since we already used their skills a few times for some maintenance of our gear! We also use the ´hang-up´ racks for inspecting our gear once in a while! outrager 6 #13 May 6, 2004 Yo ! I voted yes, but that's an understatement ;) There are people who are paranoid about their employers finding out the truth... sometimes it may be justified, but in a regular corporate world things are not that bad! Let's see: I work for a major international financial organization. I got this job by meeting my former boss on rec.skydiving. My current boss thinks i ought to make money by doing all these jumps There has rarely been a work trip without a jump or two, some rather unique places where i'd never go on my own. I keep warm memories of a particular retreat on the beach in Brazil, with a beautiful 300' freestander next to a hotel... a hard choice between a barefoot walk and a short lift by an office car Dozens of my colleagues have seen base jumping live. Most are aware there is an illegal side of the sport. There are plenty of pictures hanging in my office that frequently start a funny conversation. Now the point of all this is: during the last 10 years i have been a corporate slave, not a single person has ever said anything negative about BASE. Not once. Most of the world loves and welcomes BASE jumping. Try to be open-minded and cheerful about it, and you will be surprised how well things may go! bsbd! Yuri. riggerrob 643 #14 May 16, 2004 Yes, my current employer knows about my BASE jumping. However I made damn sure that my former employer did not know when I started BASE jumping 18 years ago. If the Canadian Armed Forces ever found out that I BASE jumped they would have thrown me in jail or the psych ward!
Skinflicka 0 #15 May 17, 2004 They do and I regret telling them. My next employer will have no clue. What is the advantage in letting them know? My current employer knows due to the fact that as a newbie my ego needed satisfying. Pretty pathetic really in hindsight. I no longer feed my ego with tales of derring do. I just remind myself of how damn good-looking I am instead. What a stud! Skin (modest and increasingly mature but beautiful with it)$kin. hookitt 1 #16 May 17, 2004 I didn't have to tell my employer. My ex-boss is a skydiver and took the liberty of making sure every one knew. I asked him to keep it to himself but instead he introduced me and imediately said, Tim Has more skydives than me and he jumps off buildings. Pretty stealthy eh? My current boss was so cool about it that last year, she let me start coming to work later so I could jump at night. She also agreed to bail me out should the need arise. I used to catch flak from my co-workers, so I finally showed some Moab footage to satisfy their curiosity. Since then, I seldom hear comments on the subject. My grammar sometimes resembles that of magnetic refrigerator poetry... Ghetto
