SkymonkeyONE 4 #1 October 5, 2004 Anyone else just see the guy in the wires on CNN today? 1st BASE jump, "A", night, in the wires about 150 feet up. Oh, and his "buddy" (who's rig is still in the wire apparently)left him there. Way to go. I have never laughed so hard in my life. edited to change a word which some of you seem perturbed about. Still, it doesn't change a thing in the overall scheme of things. CNN HEADLINE NEWS.

Bigwallmaster 0 #4 October 5, 2004 yep. Pretty funny. Saw it at 7:00 am this morning. What's even funnier is that CNN is making it out as it is "just another" parachuting incident, when it is clearly a BASE incident in the eyes of other jumpers. Glad he's okay. keep it safe out there folks, J.P.
katiebear21 0 #5 October 5, 2004 TV only... looks like one of our local dz.comers took a buddy on his first BASE jump and it went sour. I couldn't find a link on the web but headline news has been repeating it every hour. It started like "local North Carolina man, age 25, faces tresspass charges after a parachute stunt went bad" or something like that. Glad to hear he's Ok. dhracer33 0 #8 October 5, 2004 Can anyone provide any specifics, like names? This better not be another "amateur base jumper takes buddy for his first base" incident. Especially if it involves burning objects in my backyard. This wasn't off a certain 1,000 ft. A not far from the dropzone was it? I have an idea who was involved but me being on the other side of the world right now makes it kind of hard to investigate. Thanks to whomever for all the great publicity.... Especially if it involves burning objects in my backyard. Expressing your dislike of the manner in which a jump is done (especially an instructional jump) is very appropriate. The moment this becomes a name calling contest in this forum, I'll start banning people. I've already issued warnings to half the DZ.com BASE forum posters who live in North Carolina. Consider this a warning to the other half. Comment, discuss, rant. But _do not_ make personal attacks on people who post here.-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

TomAiello 26 #14 October 5, 2004 Quote...was the mentor? WTF?! I agree with your sentiments. However, consider this: He has probably already learned this lesson. Leaving him alone to ponder it, or talking to him nicely about it is far more likely to have a postive outcome in terms of his future behavior than yelling at him. In this sport, we have a great tendency to yell at people. I've found that talking to them, making friends with them, and showing them things is a _far_ more effective way to help them become safe, ethical BASE jumpers.-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
TomAiello 26 #15 October 5, 2004 I am temporarily locking this thread to clean it up. When I unlock it, please do not name _any_ names. Local jumpers have contacted me and their current situation with the authorities will be greatly aided if we do not discuss specific jumpers in public until the heat has died. Once things have been sorted out, we can revive the discussion and include some names, but I will edit out names of anyone involved in the legal action in any way who wishes to have their name removed. Thanks for understanding.-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com

McDuck 0 #17 October 5, 2004 At least one of the local mentors is going to have a town meeting for new and current BASE jumpers at our DZ to go over some of this. Those of us who are just starting out and are taking this slow and easy are becoming concerned that the number of non-burned objects in this area is dwindling rapidly. Aside from that not inconsiderable concern are many other safety and attitude related issues that need to be addressed. I'm aware of the fact that I know less than a child about BASE, but I'm learning as much as I can before I venture out and make it harder for others to jump objects in this area. I know *I* wouldn't want to be part of that problem. If you think you could be considered part of the problem, or if you DON'T but know that others think you could be, perhaps the meeting this Saturday could help ALL of the BASE jumpers in this area. More info on when and where as it develops. base570 1 #20 October 5, 2004 I am a very experienced NC jumper and I would like to be a part of the town meeting that is being planned. Unfortunatly I'll be out of town this weekend (royal gorge) and won't be able to make it. I believe that something needs to be done about this(plus many more things) and I think that ALL the jumpers in NC and SC have a say in it, not just the ones in that part of the state or DZ, because obviously they cannot make safe decisions on their own and it is directly affecting many jumpers in the 2 states they are near. I agree with you Kevin that the # of jumpable sites in NC is dwindling and safety issues are clearly evident, so either everyone sees that right now and we put a stop to this bullshit or we just let all the sites get burned and we let people get hurt and die. The choice is ours.... which will it be?? Frickin' Knuckleheads Jason BASE 570 Edited to add:

I had nothing to do with this. But I did get a call from someone that was on the scene for advice. So my wife and I drove out to the sight and gave advice to the Fire Chief on how to get him down. Mike the guy that the last big post was about and the guy that you invited to come to charlotte to jump with you on the building, drove everyone to this sight. Hell I haven't jumped in 2 months and don't plan on jumping until Bridge Day. pullhigh 0 #25 October 6, 2004 Jason, As much as I like the idea of everyone getting together, and yes I'd go to a meeting, I think it would just end up being a pissing match that would mostly likely turn into a gang related brawl... lol Oh, and our DZ is having a boogie this weekend, so I cant do this weekend either.
