Climbing Time

Recommended Posts

I'm a newbie skydiver looking to get into BASE, there's an object close by and I was wondering roughly how much time it takes to climb an approx. 900ft antennae? (thought I could maybe have some fun lunch breaks)

Hello --

This will largely depend on your physical fitness and comfort level. I'm a softy, but when I'm in "antenna climbing shape", 900ft takes me around 50 minutes. I know some guys who can climb 900ft in 30 minutes (they're in excellent shape).

More importantly, I would highly recommend contacting the local BASE jumpers in your area before attempting this. Even though you are not jumping, you're accessing the site and if you do something that's not in-tune with local procedures, you risk messing it up for others.

Also, by getting in with the locals, you can ground crew and hang out with them, which is a valuable tool for learning more about the sport. Not to mention that you'll have mentors/folks to hang out should you start jumping.

So look for the locals. Be kind, sincere, and patient...and you'll find your way in.

Best of Luck,

Bryan

Thanks for the info, I know of a few local jumpers that I can contact to make sure I'm doing the right things.
What's the best way to approach an experienced jumper about doing some groundcrew? The guys I know of I've talked to before but don't know them very well beyond casual conversation.

Just a coincident but we have a Antenna of similar height.
Most of us are about average in health and it takes us about 30-45 minutes
depending on how many breaks or how much talking we do on the way up.

But......there are others like ManBird (steve) who just never makes it to the top...... ;)

Hold on a second now. Two of those beers are Dutch, and one of those (Grolsch) is from a place I lived for three years (Enschede).

They are fine, fine beers! And that opinion is based on many many tasting samples.

...Then there are older, out of shape jumpers that take a long time to ascent to the top of the tower. (Perhaps because they are being harassed by hippy stoners during their climb). Although if you're in decent shape and find a good ladder climbing rhythm you can get to the top in about 25-30minutes.

Although beware that waiting on top of the tower for your slower climbing friends is actually a bad idea because the radiation is often most dangerous at the very top of the antenna (next to the stinger).

Good luck.

find / -name jumpers -print; cat jumpers $USER > manifest; cd /dev/airplane; more altitude; make jump; cd /pub; more beer;

I don't think he is afraid.

But..... Manbirds doctor called me today.

I know if Steve ( could ) come on this forum Himself and tell you. He Would....:)

The Tests were Positive.
The doctor confirmed he did have a large yellow streak running the entire length of his BACK...;)
