Converting a Jav to an Odyssey

Recommended Posts

Can it be done? And would the expence make it worthwhile?

Let's say I have a 99 Javelin with the bridle cover and good riser covers, could the reserve cover flap be modded to make the tongue tuck in, or would the flap need to be replaced (at the factory)?

Also, and here's the stupid bit, would there be any problem with having padding sewn onto the backpad (not replacing the entire back of the container)? Just something crossing my mind, i.e. potential first rig which could be made more comfy for BirdMan in the future.

Anything is possible, but now cost effectively.

Perhaps consider selling your Javelin and taking the differnce that you would have spent for the modifications to purchase an Odyssey.

Get your order in sooner rather than later to account for the lead time.

I would always be concerned about making any untested modifications to a rig, especially in what I consider to be high-risk snag points (anything in the way of the lines and opening). And having that modification on/in/near the reserve system is even more scary - that's a low-use, high-stakes place.

If the mfgr is willing to make these changes for you when you send your rig into them, maybe that would be the best way. Of course, then you would be asking them, not us. :)

Pretty much what I figured, thanks guys. Just to make it clear, it's all hypothetical, I was just wondering if anyone knew of it being done in the past. I don't own a rig, so I was just sounding people out!

actually, i was talking to a friend about this, and we figured it would be a lot easier just to sew padding onto the inside of a jumpsuit on the back.

I have a 96 Jav that I sent in for work to Sunpath. The WOULD NOT convert the reserve flap to tuck in. Mine has a CReW flap that covers the bottom of the reserve flap. That helps with snagging and coming open. Mine has never come open. But I know Sunpath won't make that change.

No info on the backpad.

On a Jav to get the reserve tuck you are looking at replacing at least 2 panels and one of those will require a complete rebuild of the reserve container. Its not worth it to spend the 5+ hours on it to tear it apart and rebuild it.

It would be interesting to know an estimated cost of replacing flaps on various rigs that typically get damaged from bad landings.

A couple of damaged reserve flaps making a rig less than ten years old not worth fixing gets me thinking about the new Viper H/C that claims to be so easy to do the same.

Maybe just some of the flaps on the Viper are really easy to replace, I don't know, but it would be nice to have some incentive to design the rigs easier to fix.

Maybe getting this kind of information out to buyers could be something to suggest at the conference?

Eloy tomorrow!

5 out of 5 people asked at the AGM would disagree with you ;)

Nick, just scour the second hand market. Or if buying new, the lead time is coming down now.
