base698 19 #1 March 4, 2004 Just got a Javelin that has a plethora of tiny runs in the reserve PC fabric. Was curious at what point everyone would suggest replacing the pilot chute? There are no actual holes just tiny runs.
kaerock 1 #2 March 4, 2004 I think the 'correct' answer is: right away. While it *may* not cause a problem, it's not undoubtably safe. Anything other than perfect working order is not something you want with a reserve system. Are there any broken threads or does it just look like some of the threads have been pulled out a little? I think if some of the threads have just been pulled a little, they can possibly be worked back in, if they're actually broken, I wouldn't consider that acceptable. -Rory QuoteJust got a Javelin that has a plethora of tiny runs in the reserve PC fabric. masterrig 1 #3 March 4, 2004 If, there are no broken threads in the 'runs', there should be no problem. The threads can be carefully worked-back in place. This topic is covered in Poynter's Parachute Manual. Hope, this helps. Chuck
seal_S49 0 #4 March 4, 2004 This sounds like a case of "displaced yarns." If there are not loose fibers evident, then fabric may not be appreciably weakened even though we don't like to see this; permeability will be slightly increased though. If these are evident around the PC cap, this is our reminder to be careful when rolling and tucking the PC fabric there during closing; that is when most of this damage happens. Still jumpable? That's your call, but a more experienced pair of eyes will help with that. You'll see this condition on many high-mileage Javelins, but less if they were packed by rigger who has developed good skills here. There is a knack. riggerrob 643 #5 March 6, 2004 Weave separation is quite common on Javelin reserve pilotchutes, though it is rarely a structural concern. However, if the last rigger wielded a packing paddle with far more muscle than skill, he may have torn the fabric: forcing you to replace the pilotchute.
