Climbing and BASE

Recommended Posts

Hey,

I'm wondering if people could share some of their experiences combining climbing and BASE. Has anybody ever seriously used a rig with built-in harnass, have you worn a rig and regular harnass at the same time, or do you climb and then pulley up a haulbag with your stuff?

I guess different situations require different strategies, but I'd love to hear about other people's projects and lessons, especially if they involved lots of rope and other gear.

Thanks,

Jaap Suter

Hell yeah...

We have done BASE jumps and Skydives wearing climbing sit and full body harnesses for a bunch of reasons.

rigging the setup is different every time,

I have actualy done a round parachute jump with only a climbing full body harness. it woks pretty well, cant steer those bastards anyway, one riser with no cutaway seems to work great.

but of course, this is us, our dropzone hates us, and a lot of other people do as well.

we have also used our BASE and Skydiving harness as the harness for different applications.
I got a bunch of info if you need it. PM me for the application, or if your just curious

One thing I'm curious about is what to do with gear once you're at the top. Do you compromise and minimize and stow it all away on your body before you jump (I can think of ways to hide a minimalistic rack and half-rope, but there are limits), do you go get it afterwards (tricky when you're remote and getting to the top took you a day to begin with) or do you throw down a haulbag on a little round parachute?

Although I suppose it's best to just find a climbing partner that doesn't jump. Then he can rappel all my shit down.

Any takers?

Just remove the 12 pounds of sand stored in your vagina and you will have room for a full rack, bivy-sack, and small stove.

If I carry 12 pounds, you must be carrying a truckload. How many jumps have you done since February, my friend?

I was doing a rapel base, and the built in harness did not pull on me how i wanted it to. So i wore a regular harness underneath, bulky but worked fine. I did the same when we jugged up the King fisher.

Don't do it! It's a waste of time! Far too much work for little reward...

multi pitch it. haul your shit. make sure you pack your bowl so it doesn't break on the haul. at the top, real simple. a couple of pilot chutes that are thrashed+haul bag+big toss off the edge.
toss the soft goods. keep the pro on you(safely stowed), and get off before the sun goes down.
climb base can be extremely fullfilling. physically and spiritually. especially while sending a worthy TRAD route. it's as pure as it gets. teamwork, desire, hard work, sticking to a plan, sharing a goal..............to get up and off the object.

i dont normaly 'climbbase', most of the crossover shit we have done has been to get to the top to jump multiple times, as in we climb, rap, gear up, jump, the dissmantal the system. or we have wuffy dudes that thinks base jumpers are gods bring it down. the later works best.

i have jumped a lot with a harness on underneath BASE and Skydive gear.
just, stow all the shit in your pants if its not glues to your ass, savvy?

We call this

B|B|B|B|B|B|THE MR FRANKB|B|B|B|B|

Equip: total weight (190Alex+160Calvin+60Gear=410lbs)
2 jumpers
2 skydive rigs, but with stilletto 150s,
1 spare riser
1cutaway cable in the 3 ring of the riser, (toggle mech)
1rappel device(grigri)
30ish meters of dynamic rope
1 our secret "mr bill cheat" mechanism

Actualy did this a few times... its stupid fun.
So, im wearing the climbing harness under my pants, with 30meters of lightweight rope in a stuff sack also in the pants.
I "mr bill' with alex, and once we are both flying (hauling ASS) under the stilletto 150, I hook up the rappel to the emergeny cutaway on alex, I rap down to the end of the line, 28meters below him, and he goes creepy on the canopy, it handles SO strange with the dangled weight, he can actualy get pretty close to a real, full "wingover" with me down there, i definatly was way above him on a few of those, looking what fealt likt straight down at him.

then, at 3500', i rap off the bottem of the rope, take 10ish seconds, and deploy, we land together, he drags the rope, and me with the harness.

After a few days of this, we really thought about what could go wrong so fast, and we decided if we did it the safe way it would not be fun anymore, so we have not done it since. we will probably do it again someday, as soon as i can walk again (or LAND again)

But really, some retards treid this with a bungee cord years ago and nearly killed a guy because as i stated, they were retards.
we are NOT retards, we quit this because we saw the danger, but we did it. I would not recomend anybody to try this, its kinda, scary.

You pretty much have to do it FAST, fisrt time i tried it, it took me 6000' to hook up rappel line under canopy, and i just had to get to the bottem and let go, that was really scary.

anyway, DONT try it, just wanted it to be known that we have experimented a lot with parachute/BASE/rope stuff.

find a friend who likes to hike and watch you jump :) they bring your base rig up and your climbing equipment down. that's how i've always seen it done. there are a lot more people willing to do this than you'd think!

take whatever you need to be safe / comfortable on the way up
and
use a ParaPak II (developed by Moe Viletto and Todd Shoebothom currently marketed by APEX Base )
to safely jump it down.
This is a great tool i've used to good effect over the years.................... well actually I just have used the original ParaPak, but my II was just built and will be broken in soon.

The ONLY drawback i see is it's not the hot setup for WS flight since you have a big blob on your back between the harness and container.

be safe
have fun

>>The ONLY drawback i see is it's not the hot setup for WS flight since you have a big blob on your back<<

The easy fix for that is wearing the Para-Pak (now being called the DPx) on your front and not your back. That way you'd be aerodynamically clean with your wing suit just like a Cessna Caravan is with a cargo pod slung under its belly.

Only thing is don’t forget to reverse the canopy on the rig, pull your legs up on deployment - and get set for a hell of a whipper at the end . . .

(Don’t you dare . . .)
