Old Rigs

Recommended Posts

My team is threatening to burn my old backup rig, a 1984 vector. Besides the fact that I bought it used, it has served me well. OK, so my landings aren't always great and it's a bit dusty after the years.

Is there some risk to older gear? Would you burn it too?

I have a 1984 Vector in my closet. Put the last jump on it 1996 - not because it was unairworthy but because I had newer gear to jump. If I had to, I'd probably jump it again - RW or hop and pops only though, I wouldn't freefly with it.

imho, as long as a rigger says it's airworthy why burn it?

If you're going to trash the rig, why don't you give it or sell it to a poor beginner jumper (like a broke college kid) for a first rig?

Yeah, can't FF it, its not all new and shiney, but by god, it will get someone jumping!

I had folks, when I first started, letting borrow rigs long term so I could continue to jump and I've never forgot them, its because of them I was able to continue jumping and have made it as far as I have!

(Thanks Rich Fisher and Brian Bergfield)!

Actually, I've tried to lend out some older equipment to some broke people, with no luck at all. Seems some folks would rather not jump or continue paying to rent gear than to have to jump something that isn't shiny and new and zp and freefly friendly. :S

Skydiving used to be a sport, now it is a recreation. Pretty colors and a packer.

1984 isn't old:(

1984 isn't old:(

1984 isn't old:(

Risk? depends if its been maintained and what you want to use it for.

FF now way:S

Some type of riser covers would nice:)
If you burn it at the DZ there's a risk someone will fall into the fire:S

Then there's the risk that the container colors will cash with your newer stuff. But it just a spare.

If you give it to a poor "sweet young thing" take you pick. It will be older than they areB|, and you might be able to trade them for a car wash or......something else you need:P

R.I.P.

How many of your 2700 jumps were on the same Vector I?

I am still jumping a 1986 vintage Vector I, mind you, it spent most of its life as a closet queen, Before returning it to service, I installed a Vector II reserve pilotchute, a Spandex BOC and a bridle cover. At the last repack I updated both main and reserve pin covers to Vector II standards.

One of my best friends down in Alabama still has my old Vector I and still uses it as his primary rig. It's in great shape, he replaces the velcro when needed, and just can't quantify buying a new container at the frequency he gets to jump. There is nothing wrong with older equipment so long as it is properly maintained.

I put 250 jumps in 2001 on my 81 vector!! I'm proud of it, it's two years older than I am. I learned to freefly on it, but it was hard to progress at head-down with the risers flopping at my elbows. (this would not have been a problem if I replaced the velcro as often as I should of.) It was great for RW, but not freeflying so I had to get a new rig.

It's still in my closet and once I have some extra cash and a cross-braced canopy it will then be my pond-swooping rig. A few years off still.. but its a fine rig that will be jumped again!

I think jumping older rigs is fine, just make sure that flaps stay closed, that the proper mods are done and keep up with the maintenance!
