Weight Belt/vests

Recommended Posts

I have jumped with both (although I don't much anymore since I prefer freestyle and freefly), and I prefer the belt (own a Leadbelly). I found it easier to fly (natural place for arching) and more comfortable. I can also put it on and take it off faster, so I don't have to wear the extra weight as long. In the end, I think it is a matter of personal preference.

done both... about ten pounds of lead in each. I personally prefer the belt, and didn't find it made that much of a difference as far as freefall goes. I'm sure it does, but I just correct it without thinking about it or something. The belt is personally what I'm more comfortable with, plus I wear the belt on the outside of the suit which has 2 benefits:
1) it makes my tight ass jumpsuit easier to zip up, or possible to wear a sweater.
and 2) if the day is busy, and you don't have time to strip down, you can still remove the extra weight.

The only disadvantage is that you can see it, but people could see the enormous bulge under my jumpsuit anyhow, so until they make a weight codpiece... it's the belt for this kid ;)

Or any other ideas?

Do a search. IIRC kallend posted awhile back regarding how he made his own for far less than it will cost you to buy one.

I've jumped both and prefer a belt.

$26 including all the weights. I made it from Reebok ankle weights, linked together.

Question? What is better: (particularly for female jumpers), Weight Vest or Weight Belt and Why?

Recently lost a fair bit of weight, and need to start looking at this possibility.

Shucks Ned,

I had the hots for you when you were "cuddly."
Hah! Hah!

Weights serve two functions: balance and fall rate.
Balance weights are usually used by "unbalanced" people (i.e. isn't there a song about "fat bottom girls?") but that description never really fit you. Balance weights are normally worn high on the chest (mud flap pockets, reserve container or specialized bibs).
The second - and more popular type of weights are used solely to adjust fall rate.
In the short run you will experiment with various types and weights of vests and belts. Once you have determined your ideal ballast weight, then you order a new container with special pockets sewn into the mud flaps (balance weights), reserve container (balance weights), main container (fall rate) or back pad (either function). Asking the harness to carry weights reduces pressure on your torso during opening shock. Sewing weight pockets into the container reduces the fatigue from carrying them around and also reduces the risk of drowning.
Oh, silly me! You jump in the dry places.
