first rig options?

Recommended Posts

i'm in depserate need of my first rig. it just doesn't make sense to pay rental costs all spring and summer long. so, i'm thinking about buying a new container and getting the main, reserve, and ADD all used. what are your thoughts oin doing this instead of buying a used complete rig, how much money would i be saving? i'm currently looking at the lower cost containers, kinda beiong swayed by all the positive feedback about Wings. how much do you think, ballpark estimate, that i would have to pay to get a decent main, reserve, and ADD? Idealy, im looking for 190 main, 190 reserve, and cypress ADD. Any thoughts and suggestions???

How much will you save if you buy a new car vs. a used car? Well, that's a loaded question.;)

IMHO, you should talk to the S&TA, a rigger and/or your former instructors at your DZ. I'm willing to bet that not only will they help you with advice (especially since they know what you'd use/need), they will probably help lead you to places/people that could sell you what you need.:)

if you want a ballpark estimate, its going to be anywhere from $2000 (pre 96 rig most likely) to $4000 (fairly new rig). like they said, you are looking at a lot of options. price also depends on when the cypres is due back for its 4 year/battery replacement as well as how much life is left on it. check out those threads that she mentioned above. good luck.

And if you see a rig on e-bay for $1400 with only 30 jumps on it - DONT go there.

Seriously, if you buy seccond hand from someone you can't actually meet in person, use a rigging loft as an escrow service. Have them check the item over and confirm description and condition before you hand over money.

Any seller should be happy doing this (assuming you come to an agreement over shipping costs in the event of a no-sale). If they refuse to do so, walk away. No deal is good enough to risk a few grand on... and if it looks good enough - its probably bent.

Buy everthing used for a first rig. You'll use it for a season, beat it up a little, and be able to sell the whole thing to another new jumper for next year. At that point you'll be ready for a rig that will get you through a couple of seasons, with a change or two of the main canopy along the way. If you're ready for a 170 at that time, get a rig that will hold a 150, and you'll be able to fit a 170, 150, or 135 in there, so you'll be able to use it for awhile.

Edit: It's amazing how a typo can turn a a 170 into a 107.

If you are going to piece used gear together, there will be multiple shipping charges, inspections and time variances, so it may not be the most cost effective way to go.

Is there a reason that you want a new container? Are you "hard to fit"?

With used gear, I don't think there is a cookie cutter answer to your question. It's more like, what is the best opportunity at any given time.

That being said, if you PM me your height and weight, I'll check my neck of the woods for any potential matches.

i am going to have to disagree with this statement, i have never seen used gear be more expensive than new gear, even with shipping charges and inspections...if it is someone is ripping you off!
just my $0.02

Perhaps I didn't make myself clear, or I was misinterpreted.

Pieced together Used Gear can end up costing more than a total USED GEAR package. Specifically when it is in date, packed and ready to go. I never compared it to a New Gear option.

I just repacked a 93' PD 160 and it looked brand new, I would buy it/jump it without question. Mains are like cars (like aggie said). It's not hard to find a good used main (your in a buyers market on that one, so thats a benefit to you), and as for a cypress, as long as its in the specs of airtec's service requirements, i see no prob jumping a used cyrpess either. If you are gonna buy anything new, get a new container, IMHO, if you go new on the container, you will have a structurally sound (good for all axis flying presumably) rig that fits YOU. ie, everything will be where its supposed to be in terms of fit and function. If I were you I would set yourself up a budget, for example:
$500 for a main
$500 for a reserve
$500 for a cypres
and then
whatever you end up paying for a new rig.
You could get away (if you are thorough in your search) for getting a reserve, main and cypres for around $1500.

Buy all used for your first set of gear. Rigs as a rule look like shit unless they have the reserve they were built to receive. If you wait until you find a used reserve until you order your rig you will be renting most of the year anyway. The other reason is that the rig that fits your first main canopy will not be that great for subsequent smaller ones. If you are paying new, you want it to look good for a long time.
If you sell your used rig in a year you lose a bit. If you sell your new rig in a year you lose a lot. It's like a new car, the value falls drastically the first ten minutes you own it.
