Cut resistant materials for carry off SL setups

Recommended Posts

I recently had my carry off SL set up "slide" a little under load before the break cord gave way. Upon post jump inspection, the steel girder it was attached to had sliced at least 1/2 way through the 800# or 900# braided dacron at the three separate points of contact.

Now, I know the #1 thing is to assemble the setup in a way that precludes it from sliding, thereby eliminating the serration slicing of the suspension line. Beyond that.

What materials have a greater cut resistance than 900# Dacron yet would still be suitable for fashioning carry off SL setups? 1575# braided Dacron is obvious, and what I will be using until I find something better.

1/2" tubular 1000# webbing? Spectra? Kevlar?

Does anyone have a source for black 1575# braided Dacron line?

I've noticed some paint transfer on my carry along SL setup. I always try to attach it somewhere sturdy with no sharp edges. Maybe you could get some narrow tubular webbing and thread the dacron line of the SL through it for abrasion resistance. That way the webbing sleeve can be easily replaced if damaged, and the dacron is well protected.

It's super easy to make a new one. If I noticed any wear at all, I'd just replace it for the next time.

I have no problem replacing them...I just don't want a new one to possibly fail in its first use.

I'm thinking of 1/16" 7x7 Stainless Steel cable currently. Has a 400# load rating, and cut resistance. Use a fancy knot to attach a piece of spectra for the carry away portion. Clamps or crimps or something to fashion the loops on the ends. Some epoxy to coat both the clamps and cable ends so as to protect my canopy in the stash bag.

And if it gets hung up, a small piece of metal cable laying around a site shouldn't arouse to much suspicion.

My only problem with this is the thought of the metal and clamps having a little weight. When it rips off an object, it might have enough inertia to carry over the top of my inflating canopy and dangle bridle and metal in my face. Or worse, screw with the opening. But that might be over analyzation and extreme paranoia on my part.

i do belive its dangerzone to bring metal into the subject do you really want to take the chance to ruin your canopy if that metal thing hits the object then your canopy whith a few wires out?

Ive seen dameged to my carry on sl i even ripped one apart, but still had a canopy out same time as whith brake cord..

Just replace the thing as you dont like it anymore.. it takes 10 mins to make a new one..

I think like Tom says keep it simple and just carry a couple of spare carry with you static lines, Inspect them after every jump and replace as needed. The one you used worked great. It did its job. Your rigg opened and you left nothing on the Building. What more can we want they are a desposable item as far as I am concerned.

The wire ones are still going to get kinked or have individual wires break, they are still going to need replacing. I think they have more chance / ways to hang up.

Good jump by the way, beautiful B I'll give you a call as soon as the wind dies and we'll go play

Tie a midget to your PC and tell him/her to stand on the edge in a strong position. As long as they can hold 80lbs and weigh less than your canopy can take hanging from the top..... YOUR SET!!! Good luck!! Count me in also on the next jump off said building.
