Brodes 0 #1 October 14, 2003 Hi everyone! Ive finally found a decent skydiving forum, now im happy. Im about to start AFF here in aus sometime in the next month hopefully, cant wait! Just wondering though, whats the average time people complete the AFF course over? Is it so bad to not jump every single weekend when youre doing AFF? Thanks
 michaelflying 0 #2 October 14, 2003 You can run but you can hide once the BUG bites then you will buy a cottage at the DZ and sell all your worldly possesions.www.skydivekzn.co.za
 skymama 37 #3 October 14, 2003 Welcome to the forums! I too jump in the land of oz. Dropzone.com is definately the best skydiving forum IMO. Hard to put a time on 'average', but most people at my DZ do the AFF over about two to three months. No, it's not bad not to jump every single weekend, BUT, currency is a good thing. The more current you are, the more safer you are (for yourself, and the people you jump with). It's ok to be a person to turns up to a DZ once every two or three months for example (I am thinking of a guy at my DZ who does just that). He tries and mitigates that by ALWAYS taking things slow, making sure his buddies check him over (pin checks etc), and doing some good 'dirt dives' before he gets in the turbine. It's not ideal, but it's not a show stopper either. Does anyone ever do AFF1 and hate it? My family all think i should do a tandem jump first to see if i enjoy it first but id rather not... Yes, it's a slow start and the first dozen jumps are from low altitudes, but after the US$400 basic course (which takes couple days) you pay only for the jumptickets which are something like US$15-20 per jump. ___ "Ye Gods!" As far as i know, they dont do static line anymore here. I bought a tandem ticket and went. Now, I had had an excellent month at work the previous month and was expecting a very nice bonus. Originally I had planned on buying a new car with the money, but, as many people say, I was bitten. A good portion of my cash went to my jumps. I had 3 more tandems ($180 a piece) 5 AFF ($150 a piece) 2 solos ($60 a piece). I now pay $35 a day for gear rental, $20 per jump, and $5 for packing my canopy (I really need to learn to do this myself). So far I have spent about $1,860 on jumps alone. This doesn't include the numerous articles of clothing and some essential pieces of equipment such as altimeter, goggles, ect. Yes, I have come to find this is a very pricey sport, but I will tell you this... it is well worth it.
