Charu 0 #1 December 5, 2003 Hello fellow addicts! I just did two tandem jumps while visiting Guam. Skydiving is so addictive after those two jumps, it seems like I can't get enough. I'm stationed in Japan and heard it's very expensive to work on your license. I inquired about working towards my A license and they told me i'd have to do an AFF course first. Does this sound kosher? Though I'm willing to spend on something that I want to do for the rest of my life!! I bet I could go broke. If there are any sites (besides this one and uspa.org) to get some beginners/newbie type questiosn answered, i'd really appreciate it. Thanks so much in advance!! I hope to become a "regular" on these boards :) Time permitting of course. I'm in the Navy and am currently underway at the moment. Visiting Guam was my first chance to experience the thrill of skydiving. All I want to do is pull back into port and go skydiving as much as my pocketbook allows me to ^_^ I look forward to chatting with everyone!! Charu 0 #5 December 5, 2003 Thanks for the replies. Yes, I look forward to learning something new every day. I just wish I had the chance to go all the time. In Japan, skydiving is much more expensive. I believe it's around 245,000 Yen for the AFF course lvl 1-7. (Around $2450 depending on yen to dollar). Then another 8,000 yen for insurance. But this will get me to completing the AFF course. I believe after this, and after 25 jumps, I can then start working on my A license. They have it through USPA so I'm sure my jumps will count back in the states. I'd sure hope so after spending all this money. They said something about getting permission from the Japanese gov't about all of their jumpers. (Is anyone here from Japan that knows why this is?) I'm hoping they won't stop military personnel from jumping. I just may have to take a vacation back to the states to get certified! I haven't inquired about how much my A license will cost through them, but I'm to the point where as someone said above, skydiving outweighs any money, if it's what you love. It is a life, not a sport. Is it silly I feel this way ofter two jumps? It's in my blood! Well, i've rambled on enough. The longer I am here, the more you will know that Charu loves to run her mouth. I've come out of my shell after skydiving. It's opened me up. I don't think i've been happier in my life. msmithd8769 0 #10 December 7, 2003 Hi Charu and welcome to the world of skydiving. I am retired USAF and was stationed in Japan in 1987-91 at Yokota. You say that you're Navy - are you at Yokosuka? I also did a 30 day TDY to Guam while I was there and it was great! White sand beaches and crystal clear turquoise water just like you see in the postcards. Best TDY of my career. Congrats on your first skydives and keep at it because it only gets better. Charu 0 #11 December 7, 2003 I am stationed in Yokosuka. Someone was telling me they think there is skydiving at MWR Yokota. I'm definitely going to check up on that when we pull back in. We are still out to sea right now. Yeah, Guam was very beautiful. I can't wait to visit that port again. :) Definitely do a tandem jump there again too! I'm torn between taking this AFF course here (in Japan) on leave or waiting until I get leave back to the states (which could be a few months before I do that). I may just grit my teeth and dish out the dough for the AFF course here. jeremyneas 0 #12 December 8, 2003 You'll save alot of money learning in the states. E-mail me if you have any questions about jumping in Tokyo, I jumped there for 2 years. You can get away with not paying the insurance if you tell them your military. But you have to bullshit them a little, because in Japan, if you cause an accident (skydiving) and get someone else hurt, you have to pay their hospital bills. My best advice is to wait until your back in the states or stationed somewhere where there is more opportunity (unless your made of some serious cash). Time, money, language, and distance from the DZ will just get you fed up sooner than later. Charu 0 #13 December 8, 2003 It's hard to be this close to being able to attend the class in Tokyo. I'm definitely not made of cash, heehe, Navy...remember :p I was crazy enough to take out a loan to pay for the class. I'm going to be here in Japan for another 2.5 yrs at least :( hehe, I really don't want to wait that long to experience the feeling again :) It'll be something I'll be thinking about. I have to take leave to attend the class because they are all day long classes. It'll be paying for the class and paying to go back and forth on the trains there. I live in Yokohama, so it won't be as far away as it would if I lived in Yokosuka. Thanks for the info!
