Lucie813 0 #1 October 19, 2004 Hi, everybody - I'm brand-new to skydiving, so much so that I only made my first (tandem) jump at 15,000 feet this past weekend! I had thought about it for 27 years and finally decided that, first, I wasn't ever going to really "get up the nerve," and second, I wasn't getting any younger, so what was I waiting for? It was so incredible - I've tried to describe the experience to my friends and family and coworkers and have not found the language (although I'm a writer!). I would like to make one more tandem jump, at 18,000 feet this time, then hopefully decide whether I'd like to continue on and take the AFF course. I would love to hear from other "newbies" about their experiences, and also welcome advice from veterans.
bigfall 0 #2 October 19, 2004 Hello Lucie813 my name is bigfall it really is hard to discribe the feeling when you go out the door, I however have only made 2 solo static line jumps the weather seems to be against me for making anymore jumps. this past weekend I was suppost to make 3 more jumps but the wind was to high for solo students. If you think that tandum is great just wait until you solo the feeling of freedom and power is undescribable.I don't know how old you are but I started late and would not stop now if you offered me a million dollars. KEEP JUMPING THE SKY REALLY IS YOUR PLAY GROUND NOW, LATER!!!!STEP OUT AND FEEL THE RUSH!!!! LATER SKYBOMB
skymama 37 #3 October 19, 2004 Welcome to the forums! You want our experience? I was only going to do 1 tandem too just to see what it was like. She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
Lucie813 0 #4 October 19, 2004 I started late also - age 44! But I decided if George Bush Sr. could do it at 80- or is it 85? - then I should be able to!
Lucie813 0 #5 October 19, 2004 I jumped at Skydive Space Center in Titusville and thought they were great.
DZJ 0 #6 October 19, 2004 A tandem from 18,000'? Awesome! I tried describing my first tandem in an email to a friend. Rereading it now, it seems completely inadequate to describe the rush of freefall on the feeling of sitting in the sky under canopy.
Lucie813 0 #7 October 19, 2004 And I wrote nearly a printed page and a half! What tickles me now is the reactions I'm getting from my coworkers, as the news spreads. The funniest reaction of all, however, is from my boss's two teenage sons, in whose eyes I have apparently achieved rock star status, according to their dad! Still chuckling... skymama 37 #8 October 20, 2004 QuoteI jumped at Skydive Space Center in Titusville and thought they were great. Titusville is where I did my first tandem and my IAF program a few years back. The view there is awesome! I'm sure you'll enjoy your next jump and it will probably be even more fun for you because there will be less sensory overload. You'll know what to expect! She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
skyyhi 0 #9 October 20, 2004 Im a late bloomer too. . .started jumping at 42. I never did a tandem, just decided since I had always wanted to do this I would jump in with AFF. I did fine, but I could see where sensory overload could be a problem for many and now I recommend tandem progression to anyone who asks. Enjoy your jump from 18k and let us know when you start your progression (please note I didn't say if. . .it is quite obvious that you are bitten by the bug. . .). only_at_120 0 #10 October 21, 2004 Hello Everyone, I have read the posts and have the same feeling on skydiving. I did my first tandem on 9-11 this yr. Could not stand it. Went back last Sunday. It is totally out of the grasp of someone who has never tried it. My boss asked me if I lost a screw. But yes I'm hooked, the second tandem was just awesome because we did 3 rolls out, 2 360's and he just generally let me control the canopy to get the feel of it. Oh and I'm 43. I can not wait to go again, the only reason I'm going every weekend is money and other half. And one question? How many divorces has this addiction caused....lol.....might have another one to add....lol.....

Lucie813 0 #12 October 21, 2004 I have to give you real credit for trying it again when your first experience was so unpleasant! What happened? And what exactly do you mean by "rolls"? Remember, I'm new at this...
 only_at_120 0 #13 October 22, 2004 Well I actually meant that I couldn't stand the fact that I had so much fun and my other half is just put totally off by it. The first time was great but the second time was wonderful. When we exited the plane, we rolled out, and did 3 rolls. I'm new to so that's the only way I know to put it. We did a tuck and roll out and it was a blast. I want to go this Sat. Great stress relief!!!!!Quote
 only_at_120 0 #14 October 22, 2004 For some reason, that was one of my first thoughts after my first tandem.
