Hello from a new skydiver

Recommended Posts

Hi! My name is Kelly; I made my first jump (a tandem--thanks to Chris Fuller for the AWESOME ride!) back on October 9 at the Duanesburg Skydiving Club. I went into the experience thinking that skydiving would be a once in a lifetime thing for me, but I LOVED it. Now I want to get licensed, but have two problems: 1) no money and 2) whuffo husband who isn't thrilled about the idea of me making a habit out of jumping out of airplanes. Both those obstacles can be overcome; it just may take a little time. Anyway, I am glad to have found Dropzone; I am learning so much here! Now, if I could just figure out how to upload the video of my jump to my website... Anyway, hi everybody and I look forward to getting to know you all better!

Welcome, Kelly! Congrats on your first jump and it's obvious that you have been bitten by the skydiving bug....but don't worry. It's nothing that 13.5 Kft and an open door won't temporarily alleviate. ;)

1) learn to pack for $$$
2) take him by the ears and make him do a tandem
My reality and yours are quite different.

Hi Kelly,
Welcome to the club. :) I had the exact same situation as you. It was just supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime thing for me, too. But I just couldn't stop thinking about skydiving after that 1st jump. I tried to deny it for a few weeks, but then realized there was no way I was ever going to be able to concentrate on anything else. So I told my hubby I was going to do AFP and become a skydiver.

First let me tell U, jumping solo is WAY better than tandem!! Its a lot more pressure because you are responsible for yourself, but that also means so much more exhilaration and satisfaction when you land. U will love it! :)
I realize not all husbands are as easygoing and giving as my husband, but I hope that you can find your own balance. One suggestion -- try to save up enough money so you can do AFF/AFP all at once. Or at least try to keep jumping every 2 wks, it makes it a lot easier when theres less time between jumps.

Good luck and GO FOR IT!!! :)

Thanks everybody for the warm greetings and humorous advice. The problem of no money will go away. I expect that after our tax refund check arrives this spring, I will quickly make my way to the nearest DZ and go through the AFF course and get my A license. Also, waiting until spring comes will give my husband time to get over his shock that the club where I did my tandem recently totalled their Cessna in an emergency landing right after take-off. (Luckily, nobody was seriously hurt in that incident. WHEW!)

As for the whuffo husband, I should give him a bit more credit. He's not really a whuffo. He DOES understand why I would love to FLY! He just doesn't want to do it himself. Too bad. He doesn't know what he is missing.

Truth is, he is the one who gave me the gift certificate for the tandem jump as a birthday present. See, my parents live really close to a DZ, and all summer long, whenever we go to visit them, we'd hear the plane buzzing overhead and see the little dots falling from the sky. And I'd say, "Someday, I am going to do that." And my husband would say, "No way." Then, on my last birthday, he surprised me with a gift certificate for a tandem jump.

Divorce him? No way. I've got him too well-trained to do my bidding. ;-)

Happy jumpin' everybody,

Kelly

hi Kelly,
Welcome to the forums. Maybe one day your hubby will decide to give it a once in a lifetime try too. My husband and I started together last summer. It was his dream to be a regular and my dream to do it once, now I'm hooked and look forward to Saturdays when we can go hang out at the dropzone. If your dropzone is anything like ours, you will soon realize that you've found a second family. Now my husband and I jump several times a month. It's nice to have something so exciting that we love to do together.
Blue skies,
Dawn

Hi Kelly,

Like you i did my first tandem jump and alas i was hooked. My hubby was on whuffo statis for a while but i convinced him to do a tandem jump just so he could experience what it is i feel when im 14,00 ft up and jumping out of a perfectly good aircraft.
After he did his tandem jump he was stoked, but has said that he is more than happy to watch!!;)

I try to get to my DZ (www.skydivenagambie.com.au) every 2 weeks to keep the spirit alive ( not that i wanes at all:ph34r:)

I hope you get out of the sport what i do, as i have 2 kids and find it a great way to destrees and it also keeps life in check!!

Blue skies

Renee :)
