c0mpletec0ntrol 0 #1 November 3, 2005 hey guys, made my first jump 4 days ago and i'm still psyched on life... haha i can't imagine how many threads on this section of the messageboard start off like that Its too bad i have to wait until april to start AFF. About how much is it to complete? I've heard a rough estimate of about $2700 to get your A license. Thats tough news for a poor college kid such as myself, with an ever worsening addiction such as this. At least i can tell my parents that its better than drugs. I wanted to thank everyone who was so supportive on my first thread in the general discussion area. Everyone on this board/everyone i've spoken to whos involved in skydiving are so positive, and willing to help out even a newbie such as myself. Anyway, I'm Terrence, and I can't wait to contribute more. blue skies.
Eule 0 #2 November 3, 2005 QuoteIts too bad i have to wait until april to start AFF. Fly to someplace warm over Thanksgiving (Florida, Arizona, California) and do it then. :) QuoteAbout how much is it to complete? I've heard a rough estimate of about $2700 to get your A license. That's probably in the ball park. It depends a lot on what part of the country you're in, the individual dropzone, and so on. Around here (Oklahoma, Texas) you might pay $250-$300 for the first jump course and first jump, $150-$200 for your next two two-instructor jumps, $100-$150 for four one- instructor jumps, and $50-$75 for the 18 or so additional jumps you need (minimum) to get an A license. This puts the total cost at around $1850-$2650. Some people go right through in 7 AFF jumps and 25 jumps total to A and some people (like me) take more than that. This assumes you don't have any gear of your own and are using the DZ's gear. You'll probably buy one or two things of your own, like a log book ($10) and maybe some goggles ($15). You'll also have to spend about $50 to join USPA. Depending on how far away the DZ is, the fuel to get there may be a consideration. Then there's beer. At a minimum, you will owe a case of beer for your first jump and a case of beer when you get your A. None of the skydivers I know consider Natural Light to be beer, so you're looking at spending $25 or more per case. This does assume you're of legal age; if you're not, your fellow skydivers will be most happy to keep track for you so you can catch up when you're old enough. Welcome! StevePhelps 0 #5 November 3, 2005 Welcome to the forums. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. It may cost $2700, but when you pay as you go it won't seem that way. Here is a tip. Learn to pack this winter. DZs always can use packers! Then you can help pay for your jumps that way, plus you'll be ahead of the game when it comes to earning your A license. I know a jumper who has 100+ jumps and can't pack! Obviously she packed once to pass her profeciantcy card, but never packed again. I say ... learn to pack during this winter. It will prove valuable in so many ways. Welcome to the sky!

Now with a C lic I am finally going to hang with a packer who is staying North this winter and pack all day till I get it right. I feel like a jerk at the DZ that i can't pack, now will I still be lazy sometimes and pay a packer probably. By the way welcome. One jump, one piece of equipment at a time and you'll be fine. Save money all winter then go for it. Or like it was said go somewhere warm. If you do that when you come back find a DZ in the North that jumps in winter its cold but you will stay current."Cloudy Skies look different through skydivers eyes. Is that a hole in the clouds I see?" Let's get driving! Blue Skies and Sweet Dreams
StephZ 0 #7 November 4, 2005 QuoteThats tough news for a poor college kid such as myself, with an ever worsening addiction such as this. At least i can tell my parents that its better than drugs. It gets even worse when you start calculating how many jump you could be making for the money you just spen on books! I've now decided that we skydiving college kids need some skydiving scholarships! It's hard having an expensive hobby while trying to pay for school ... but it'll never be a matter of weather or not to put out the money on a jump, it'll be how to come up with it Congrats, and welcome to the addiction! I am not afraid . . . I was born to do this -Joan of Arc- But what do I know, I'm only
