Guest #5 August 2, 2006 Hey! Welcome! Definitely do a jump, its completely awesome! "Dangerous" is relative. People can sway the statistics either saying it is dangerous or it isn't. Lol. It's all a calculated risk...just like driving a car! It might be in "good" mechanical condition, but a tire blows...similar difference.... Good luck on your adventures!
 ray2506 0 #6 August 2, 2006 I've done a couple of tandems in the past 3 years and about 10 years ago, did the sponsored 2,500ft static line sponsored charity jump. The 2,500 ft static line jump was more scary than my first tandem at 14,000. The sencond tandem at 14,000 was even more scary.... Now at long last, I have just commited to go to Lake Wales DZ and do my skydiving course! (happens in December this year) Part of me is looking forward to it with awesome eagerness, the other part of me is peeing my pants! When I get to the door and have that nano second of fear, will I be able to go? Or will I crumble? When I get out of the door, will I remember everything I have been taught and do the thing right, or will I fold up into the fetal position and crumble? If I crumble, will the two guys holding each side of me be able to sort me out...? Either way, my yearning to do this overcomes all and I'm gonna try.... Is it normal to be so scared?? Some times i really want to jump. And some times I am thinking like But what if the canopy messes up and i don´t get the reserv out in time. So im having a hard time to make up my mind. I really think it would be awsome to do this. But I dont want to lose my life doing it. So I have one more question. Can you jump all your life without disaster. (sorry for the spelling im from Sweden) Life is made for living
 skymama 37 #9 August 3, 2006 You can jump all of your life with no skydiving disaster, but there it is no guaranteed. Like I said, you can try and do everything right but you can still kill yourself skydiving. Recently, a very famous and excellent jumper died because she had a malfunction, used her reserve and there was something wrong with the reserve lines so that it was in a spin. She fought it all the way down, but she still died. Another example, is when someone will be flying their canopy correctly and another jumper can fly into their canopy and kill them. Just like in all aspects in life, no matter how much training you have or how smart you are, freaky things still happen. There are things that you can do to be a safer skydiver like flying a larger canopy, not doing speedy hook turns to land, only jumping in good weather conditions, etc., but even then there is no guarantee. I don't agree with the argument that it is safer than driving. If you do a search on the forums you'll see that it has been discussed before. It is awesome to skydive, but there will always be a risk of death on every jump. You are definitely young, so you have plenty of time to think this over before you do make a first jump. I'm not trying to talk you out of it, I just want you to be aware of the consequences. One time I heared one guy say that if you ever thought about skydiving and wanted to try it out. You will. I belive him in that statment. What I will do next is to talk to my DZ where I live and hear what they have to say. Maybe I will jump this year or the next year or in two years but one thing is for certain. I will take the licens one day. Also read the Safety and Training Forum, you can learn a whole bunch there. There are also a couple of books that you can read by Dan Poynter, Tom Buchanan and Brian Germain that are quite informative. Have fun when you do jump and stay safe! She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
 Join the conversation You can post now and register later.
