Newbie Taking it Slow

Recommended Posts

Hello:)
I'm new to these forums (but have posted on the tunnel one already).
I did a tandem this summer and although it made me feel as sick as a dog I loved it and want to do more. Will try to get my Aff going next spring after doing more tunnel time this winter.
I'm really nervous about being in control of my own canopy as it was on opening that I felt sick. My instructor asked if I wanted to take control but I just couldn't and had to rest my feet on his.
Any advice or tips about resolving this problem and what to do/read up on before starting?

Dont worry at all about getting sick again. On my first Tandem I felt so queasy I thought I was gonna blow chunks everywhere under canopy. My mistake was that I didnt eat a single bite of food all day before my jump which was in the afternoon. Jumping on an empty stomach means your blood sugar is low, so when your adrenaline starts pumping before and during the jump your blood sugar gets drained causing you to get very lightheaded and thus queasy. Next time you jump make sure to eat a light meal and drink some juice or soda and you will feel much better.

Some people say also not to tighten your leg straps super tight either because it cuts off blood flow in your femoral artery and it causes lightheadedness, but Ive never had this problem, and I dont like risking anything with loose legstraps.

On my first Tandem I felt sick as hell and I couldnt take control of the canopy either when offered because I was focused on not puking. Now 3 months and 20 jumps later I feel great in the sky and particularly under canopy where I have yet to feel even the slightest bit of nausea since the first tandem.

A guy on the day mentioned some kind of tablets I think he said they were for travel sickness:) thought he was making fun of me.

The leg straps were very tight and a few people have said this might have been why but not sure if I'd like to jump with any straps being lose

The eating thing sounds about right though, I hadn't had much if anything actually (accept a pack of fruit pastills!).

Good advice to try another tandem first though, I wouldn't want to be under my own canopy then feel so sick I couldn't control it, or even try to. Just the thought makes me nervous as hell to be honest.

Thanks very much for the advice:)

dont take the tablets, it is just the adrenaline rush, i imagine you must be a thin girl. I have known a few thin girls to love the freefall and then pass out once the canopy opens.
It is just over whelming. I doubt it will happen again cause if you did aff you would have far too much on your mind to even remember to feel sick.

you probably felt a touch of travel sickness when the canopy was in a turn, it happens to a lot of people :)
