Neverendless question - Wings,Javelin,Javelin Odyssey

Recommended Posts

Since I heard from some people that Javelin (normal and Odyssey) are way better than Wings, now I'm in doubt what container to buy.
I never tried Odyssey so please help, is Odyssey that much better in any way than Wings and is it worth almost 500 USD difference and 9 weeks more delivery time?

Thks

You're not gonna find that many people on here who will agree with that. Even where people prefer the Jav (or whatever) to the wings, most agree that the Wings is a very nice system.

In my opinion - the main closing flap on the Jav goes the "wrong" way. ;) ...but it's an excellent container dispite that, just like 90% of the market.

i don't like the finishing touch on the jav.
the wings is not the best i've seen but its pretty good.

i like a more "streamlined" rig and wings does the job for me (and the price is right too)
i also liked the micron and even PdF's legend looks cool.

then again, i'm a bit biased...

I've owned both a Javelin and Wings and I prefer the Wings to the original Jav design. I like the Odyessy, but if I was going to choose between the two I would get a Wings with the cut in laterals (like on the Jav Odyessy) since they're offering them free this month, and I've been super happy with my Wings...plus the price makes a difference for me.

Its like anything else in this world, each system has advantages and each system has disadvantages.

Saying that a Jav is "way better than Wings" is a HUGE step though. If you want, someday I'll tell you about how a borrowed Jav tried to kill me, but my Wings has been rock solid over the last 700 or so sport jumps I've put on it.

Honestly, basically just aboue every rig from the "big boys" on the market today is a well built rig that is FF safe, so find the one you want, with the company backing it that you like and get it.

It sounds like you've already made up your decision, though, and won't be happy unless you spend the extra money and wait the much longer time to get yourself a Jav Odyssey.

I own both a Wings and a Javelin. I also took a really good look at the Odyssey. I prefer the Wings by far. The Wing's construction, quality of stiching, and the attention to details is IMO superior. I also like the looks better and I do not like how the main flap closes on the Jav.

One more thing, there are no BAD rigs on the market nowadays. I jumped a Dolphin for my first 300 jumps and I have never had a problem with it.

The only rig that I think has a edge over all the others is the Vector III due to the skyhook, a feature I would love to add to all my containers (minus the CRW one).

Not at all.

When i bought a container last year, i originally wanted an Odyssey, as i had a Jav before. Time to order, deliverytime was 20+ weeks. So i got a Wings instead...
Best decision ever. There are a lot of people out there who simply like to stick with the biggest fish...

That's exactly what happened to me. Wanted a Jav because I'd previously had a Jav and liked it, besides all my friends had Javs. Everybody has a Jav why would I want to be different?

Er… because it meant waiting 6 months!

My friend ordered a Jav 1 week before I ordered my Wings. I’ve had my Wings since the beginning of last October. My mate got his Jav 3 weeks ago! Thus if I’d ordered a Jav when I’d ordered my Wings I would have just got it two weeks ago and it would still be unjumped due to weather! Instead I’ve done nearly 100 jumps on my Wings.

Both are good rigs.
If I had the spare cash today, I would order a Wings.
Look at it this way, both rigs are improvements on the 20-year-old original concept. However, the Javelin Odyssey is the result of a bunch of minor improvements to an existing design, limited by the production line.
Wings - on the other hand - had the luxury of the original designer (Henry P.) starting with a clean sheet of paper ten years later. This resulted Wings having a bunch of minor improvements (i.e. main pin cover).

Buy a Wings and be done with it. Wings has a more secure main flap closure, costs less and has a much better delivery time. What's not to like?

Based on the mistakes I've had to deal with on the last few Wings I've delt with, I would hesitate to recommend them

such as?
when i got mine there was a broken stich on the main lift web.
my rigger told me it happens (shouldn't but it does)
anyway, beside that, they were great, shipped it back from israel (even though i ordered it in the US) and send it back to me a few days later.

i forgave them [inline face.gif]

edit: damn smiley won't show here

Such as risers without an RSL ring, no stainless where stainless was requested, SkydiveUWE written incorrectly on the mudflap maybe?

(Cheers for your help with that one JP - I'm still trying to prompt the committee to make up their mind about what they're gonna do with the rig... at the moment it's sat forlornly in my living room).

Oh, yeah - apparently (I've not been dealing with it directly - its the clubs committee's problem) they've been very helpful and we could have sent it back and had it all remedied and back to us by now (with a free reserve packjob at that) but the committee still hasnt decided whether or not it wants to bother sending it back for stainless or if a couple of gear bags wouldn't be a better way of spending the money.

The replacement risers beat the rig back to England so that was a bit of a non-issue. The funny thing with the text on the mud flap is that they made exactly the same mistake as Sunpath did on the club Odyssey (ordered 6 months earlier rather than 4 weeks as with the Wings). As both co.s made exactly the same mistake the text on the two club rigs looks exactly the same after all! That's called serendipity.

Why do you think the main pin cover is more secure?

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Wings style main pin covers can tuck deeper than Javelin and since they tuck into the same flap, that eliminates a dozen variables from the equation: loop length, pack density, fit on side flaps, etc.

Up-facing main pin flaps are infinitely more secure than "tuck under" varieties, especially in the larger sizes. I never had either of my personal Jav flaps come undone (XRS and RS Ody), but the larger student Ody's we had at Raeford came open on a regular basis. Conversely, the flaps on the student Wings containers we have at the Green Beret Parachute Club have not once come undone. Ultimately, it obviously comes down to personal preference, but if I were buying a "larger" rig, I would steer away from a rig which is known to have main-flap and riser-cover closure issues in those sizes.
