Static Line in Lodi, CA

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. I'm just....writing up an account of my experience skydiving.

I did two tandems -- first one was June of last year (birthday -- whoo!), second one was a week or two ago. I started my S/L on Wednesday. Three jumps total that day and...I was still on step one -- I couldn't get the arch position. I had a blast under canopy, but...

Thursday -- six jumps today. Jump 4 was like the first three, but my jumpmaster Will (who seriously rocks) was willing to let me try practice pulls. Jump 6...Bill Dause flew the Cessna. I wasn't certain whether or not I arched right. But...I did. :O Woo! Hit freefall at Jump....8, as I recall. Did my 5 second right after.

Friday -- four jumps. 10 second went fine. 15 second...had trouble with awareness. Then my first jump out of an Otter. And my second. And.....owwwwwww. The stability wasn't so much a problem. I had NO altitude awareness -- the second time....(granted, I was exhausted, but...) I think I looked at my altimeter...once, maybe twice. And I never really _saw_ it. That, plus my instability, plus my difficulties with arching, plus.....etc....etc....

So Bill Dause, Will and I talked. Bill was concerned -- he had tried to warn me off before I started because he felt I was wanted to skydive for the wrong reasons. Maybe I was...but I do feel he saw my personality correctly. And that's really what it's about at this stage of the game, for me.

I was concerned about my altitude awareness. I feel, absolutely, that unless I have that, I should NOT jump. I don't want to risk anything -- nor do I want to risk running into someone else with my instability.

So I'm self-grounded for right now. Some CRW Dawgs are recommending tandems, but my partner Marcie is suggesting time. And I think time is just what's going to have to happen. I'm only 20, after all.

But I had a WONDERFUL time in the sky, especially under canopy. Better yet, I'm staying here in the community -- I'm going to become more active in the ways I can -- running errands, learning to pack then packing....and so on. Maybe one day I'll get in the sky again....even if it's only for a tandem. :$

I want to...just...thank you. Bill Dause's DZ is wonderful. :) And even if I'm not in the sky, the 13 jumps were still a wonderful (900% positive) experience that helped me in learning more about myself.

So...Thank You. and Happy Flying!!

First off welcome and congrats on completing the S/L program.
Hey thats cool your making a smart decision on behalf of your own safety and life to stop skydiving...... I did the S/L program out in lodi about 6 months ago and it went really good for me. My only suggestion might be to go to some other DZ's because they are all run differently.
I personally like the "feel" Ive gotten at Skydance in Davis so that is my new Home. THey have taught me some safety precautions that I just didnt learn at lodi. That is one of the first and foremost things I and we all need if we want to continue skydiving. SAFETY. So thats just what has worked for me.

Hmm...I did hear suggestions from elsewhere about trying other places.

The CReW Dogs have recomended wind tunnel stuff also...and have pointed out that the stuff I was not doing very well at was stuff that's not really taught in static line anyways. ^_^;; So....blah?

But many thanks. :) We'll see how I feel about it all...

(and, hey, if I was going to stop on any jump number... it would've been 13. ;) Lucky number!!)

Ask if they have any instructors that are AFF certified and see if they can do a modified AFF jump with you to see if you can work some of your issues out and gain some confidence. We're a S/L dz but have a few instructors with their AFF rating and if people are having issues, depending on the issues, they'll go up and do a modified AFF jump from full altitude that focuses on the issues that you're having.

Mixing it up might spark something for your and might suddenly make it click for you.

Keep at it, be safe and HAVE FUN!

Hi Mira, I usally don't post in this section of threads, but I must say, try wind tunnel, it can really help your overall confidence in your body flight and can make you become more relaxed, which in turn will help make you become more "aware" of your surroundings. it all works hand in hand.
talking from personal experience here<----
relaxation is the key!!! body and mind!!!
whatever your decision good luck!!:)

If you're still following this thread and want to jump again sometime, go talk to Ed (bodypilot1about some one on one AFF training.

He is a private instructor that jumps primarily in Lodi. Every one there knows him and he's very good.

I know nothing of your situation but training with Ed will far surpass any training you can get via static line.

Goot luck! 13 is a good number :)

Hi MiraCheskis, I went to Lodi to finish the backside of my A license card ( and got a reasonable amount of crap about it at my home dz ) LOL...anyway at first I was a little apprehensive about being at a new dropzone. Lodi has A LOT of talent. after spending about an hour learning how to pack (thanx Clair & Jimmy) up we went. got to spot the first load ( was my first time ). then on the ground had to practically run to the hangar grab another rig for the turn then run to the plane. My point is this Lodi is a GREAT dropzone probably more geared for experienced jumpers, once your licensed & have a number of jumps there the experience would most likely go smoother. ^5s to you for re-evaluating your reasons for jumping. I do think that maybe trying a slower paced dz may be the ticket for you...I won't promote my home dz (very laid back) as I don't want to in anyway seem disrespectful towards Lodi. I will definitely jump there again!!! sorry for being so long winded. Blue Skies!!!

Hi Mira

Day 1 - 3 jumps
Day 2 - 6 jumps
Day 3 - 4 jumps

Maybe you were just trying to progress too fast! Remember that your mind needs time to digest all of the information that is crammed into you during your FJC and student progression. You need time to assess what you've done to apply what you've learnt. I would never allow a student to do more than 3 jumps in a day. Usually after their 3rd jump, the ability to learn has diminished.

Im realy glad you enjoyed your 13 jumps, and I hope that you'll take to the skies again soon!

welcome to dropzone.com and the norcal skydiving community! Skydving isn't something to be taken lightly, so the fact that you're willing to ground yourself is good. I would recommend trying to go the aff route if possible, as it is good to have someone there to really see what you're doing and help correct you while your're doing it. I would also recommened limiting yourself to one or two jumps a day, to let the lessons you learn sink in. Lastly, altitude awareness is paramount, as you won't always have the SL pulling for you! I'm not an instructor, and I've never done SL, but I personally would make alti-awareness my #1 priority (with the exception of pulling!).
