theOneAndOnly 0 #1 February 14, 2008 Hi all, I recently found this website and am now addicted to reading posts. I've done a lot of searching and read reviews but I have two quick questions: I want to do the AFF training and from what I can tell Skydive Dallas has great people but it can be windy. Would this be a problem for someone doing AFF? I've only made 1 tandem jump in Monterrey Bay, CA @ 18,000 feet. I noticed that most places only go between 13-15k feet. Is there a reason for it? Thanks for any and all answers. - Tyler
JustChuteMeNow 0 #2 February 14, 2008 Hey Tyler, Welcome to the sport. Skydive Dallas does have great people and I'm sure you would have a really good experience there. As far as wind goes, as a student you will not be able to jump in winds over 14 knots. It is a very good rule. However, there will be many days available that will have winds below 14 knots. On other days the winds will be below 14 knots early in the morning or late in the evening and this will also allow time for students to jumps. Regarding your second question about why most dropzones usually only go between 13K and 15K, there are two main reasons. The first reason is because oxygen is required for jumpers if they go to 18K but it is not required for jumpers below 15K. The second reason is one of economics. I can turn more loads if I don't go as high and I use less fuel if I don't go as high. Again welcome to the sport.Think of how stupid the average person is and realize that statistically half of them are stupider than that.
blackout 0 #3 February 15, 2008 well welcome aboard, what he said is accurate and trust me, you dont want to jump with wind speeds much more than 10 knots as they get much higher at higher altitudes which can be scary when you arent flying forward or in other cases, flying backward. Never experienced flying backward, but had almost no ground speed above 1k

theOneAndOnly 0 #7 February 16, 2008 Here's the place that I did it at. They claim to be the worlds highest tandem jumps...don't know if they're the only ones doing 18k... http://www.skydivemontereybay.com Thanks for all the help. I think I'll take a trip out to Skydive Dallas and talk with them about their AFF training. -Tyler
