Hello from Baltimore!

Recommended Posts

Hey all, my name is David and I did my first tandem last fall and haven't able to get it out of my mind since. It wasn't at all what I expected, after the initial flipping it was peaceful and calm, not sure I've ever felt that at peace before. I will be starting AFF or A license school in a few weeks when the weather clears. Just wanted to say hello to all of you and any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Yep....hook, line and sinker!

That's one of the great things I love about this sport. When your foot leaves the door, you're not thinking about any of those nagging problems in life....finances, girlfriends, etc. nothing of any of it.

What DZ will yoube going to?

Advice:
-LISTEN TO YOUR INSTRUCTORS!
-Your best advice will come from them...not the internet.

Welcome to the world of Skydiving, David!
My reality and yours are quite different.
I think we're all Bozos on this bus.

Thank you for the welcome and now that I think of it, your right, the best advice will come from my instructors...Think I'll be listening to them.

Looks like I will be going to Sky Dive DelMarVa www.skydivedelmarva.com I spoke with Dave there and really like him, feel like I'll be in good hands with him. I guess at this point in the year I am just waiting for the weather to get better.

Looking forward to the training and hopefully trading stories with the rest of you...

Hi David,

Skydive Delmarva is having safety day on March 26, starting at 8 am. You should come out and check it out. You can definitely absorb a lot and it's a great way to meet everyone.

Dave is a great manager and we have a great staff and a good group of funjumpers as well.

We'll also be having a bonfire Saturday night, so bring a sleeping bag, pillow and your favorite beer.
Hope to see you out there!

-Lisa

I missed it! I really couldn't have made it anyway, having some dental and medical procedures done to try and repair the effects of a conversation I lost with a steering wheel...Be a few more weeks before I'm even able to speak properly so I'm laying pretty low...I'll be ready though when the weather clears. Dave was saying we might be able to start in April but I've also heard May. I have a place to stay in Bridgeville, DE about 15-20 minutes from the airport and already warned them that I'd probably be around every weekend. Hope to see you out there though! I'm addicted to the weather channel now I've been watching so much to see when the weather will to be good...

Might have a problem Lance, now it's not looking like I won't have teeth until the end of April...lost so much weight you guys might have to tie rocks to me...seems this all I can think about lately...sure I will check back in before and definitely after the big day...

Dude, go back. It's worth it. Can't tell you how many days I sat around watching others jump. The wait makes the jump that much better.

Oh, it's not that I won't go skydiving, just not sure I want to go back to that DZ. When my classmate and I finished the classroom portion we were told to have a seat and wait for our names to be called and that we should be airborn in 30 minutes. The only announcement I heard was calling my instructor to the manifest office, the next thing I saw after that was my classmate suited up and boarding the airplane. No one said a word to me, I sat patiently on that bench for nearly 2 hours before anyone even said anything to me and then there was no explanation, nothing, just something about how it didn't look good but hang around and see if it changes. Earlier in the day our instructor told us how great it was that there were so many instructors around. I didnt say anything to anyone yet other jumpers kept walking up and offering theories about what happened. I understand that weather and other things happen but to tell me to get ready to go up and then I have to sit and watch my classmate go and no one offered any explanation or came to tell me what was up is crap. I don't know, maybe I should have bought the video package like my classmate....

Oh, give it another try but next time be a little proactive about getting in the air and remind them that you're still waiting. I don't know where you're jumping, but I can tell you that here in FL the wind condition can change with every load on some days. So, it could have been ok for your friend, but not ok for another student once he came down.

Hey David,

The weather is horrible in MD/DE/VA in April.... that's what they always say "April showers bring may flowers".

We only got one load up that whole weekend and we have only flown 4 loads (including weekday loads) since (and including) safety day... so that's how bad we've been weathered out.

Don't let the experience discourage you... I'm not sure what happened and why your classmate went up and not you, or why nobody came around to chat with you, but I can promise you that's not typical for Delmarva. I've been jumping there 7 years now and from the minute I set foot there I never felt like anything less than family. I've been to a lot of dropzones and only have seen what Delmarva has at 2 other places.

Next time let me know you're coming out and I'll introduce you around. I actually was looking for someone with no teeth on safety day but I must have missed you. Last weekend I was really busy trying to get my trailer ready for the season so I wasn't around chatting much, and I'm sure that was the case with a lot of people since the season is just starting up and the weather was so iffy.

Hope you come out again soon (try May!) and have a much better experience. :-)

PS - on another note after a few more jumps I think you'll find that not only do you not mind coming out to the dropzone and waiting 2 hrs to jump, but you'll actually drive the whole way out there just to hang out and not jump... The camaraderie and friendship in this sport is something you will find few other places in life....

Update...went back today, got to jump! it was incredible!!! the people at skydive Delmarva couldn't have been better. Think I learned a lot more by not going that first time, feeling pretty stupid for being mad about what happened the first time. Thanks to you guys that encouraged me to go back, you were all right. This was totally different, I asked people what was going on and they were happy to point me in the right direction. I went into the packing area and watched what was going on and realized how busy things were. Expect to make it back next week...oh and by the way, the jump went great all the way until the butt landing at the end...hope to see you all in the sky someday!
