Ruthie,
Welcome to the big blue skies! You're going to love this sport.

The advice you got was good advice. With the rapid pressure changes we experience, blocked sinuses could very well rupture.

If you are unable to easily equalize pressure in your ears and sinuses, it's going to be, at the least, very painful.

The sky will be here waiting for you, I promise you.
:)

What DZ are you going to?

My reality and yours are quite different.

Question #1 - What kind of jump are you doing. AFF or Tandem go all the way to altitude and experience the most pressure change. Static Line doesn't go up as high and has less pressure change.

Question #2 - What does "not quite there yet" mean? The most important question is How clear are your eustacian tubes? Those run from your inner ear to your sinuses and allow for equalization of the pressure. That's the "clearing your ears" that you experience in a plane, scuba diving or even going up and down big hills.

If you aren't absolutely sure that you can clear your ears as needed, DON"T JUMP!!!

The pain of unclearable ears is excruciating. The potential for serious, permanent injury is very real. The DZ will understand, and may not permit you to jump if you tell them the truth (highly recommended not to lie to the people into whose hands you are putting your life).
Far better to wait a week or two to jump vs forcing the issue and maybe not being able to jump ever again.

What's up and welcome!!

Wait... It's the kind of pain everyone should want to NOT experience. Although I only know what this pain is like from having to fly with a serious sinus blockage I'm thinking it's about the same on a skydive.

It's frikin horrible!! Your head feels like it'll explode and the worst part is you could mess yourself up to the point that you can't jump, or so I've heard. Even if that last part isn't true it's still not worth it. No cold medicine in the world can save you once your head gets out of whack... sorry, but I don't know the medical term for it.
