Thanatos340 1 #1 June 17, 2004 My new Rig (Icon, Pilot and Smart) was just delivered today. Woo Hooo!! Aerodyne Rocks!! I cant wait to get home from work so I finally get to see it. Now the Bad News.. My Cypres will not get back from its 4 year until Monday. (SSK is shipping it out today but would not change it to overnight even though I offered to pay the difference Plus an "Inconvenience Fee". They "already logged off the UPS Software". Real customer service there!!) I REALLY want to jump my new rig this weekend. My rigger said he could get it inspected, assembled and Packed on Friday Night but that was before we knew the cypres would not be here. I could either get the rig packed and jump this weekend and then pay for another repack next week once the cypress comes in or I could wait until next week and Just jump rental Gear this weekend (Rental Gear for the weekend will actually cost more than a Second Reserve Repack) I know the Reserve has to be popped for the Cypres Installation, But will the rigger really have to do a full repack just to install the cypres? Should I just wait to get the rig assembled?
bmcd308 0 #2 June 17, 2004 I can't answer your question, but if you would do me a favor I would appreciate it. Look at the warning label on your Smart, and tell me the size of your reserve in square feet and the maximum operating weight and speed on the orange label. Please post those in the "Reserve TSO" thread. Thanks. ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com

ChrisL 2 #4 June 17, 2004 For me the question would be decided on a financial basis. If money is not an issue then get that puppy assembled now and jump it this weekend then get the cypres installed next week.__ My mighty steed
FrogNog 1 #5 June 17, 2004 Is the extra $ you will have to pay for rental worth it to you to have a Cypres on your back this weekend? -=-=-=-=- Pull.
Hooknswoop 19 #6 June 17, 2004 If the same rigger opens the container and installs the Cypres, they do not have to re-pack it. Derek

mjosparky 4 #8 June 17, 2004 You were willing to pay UPS for overnight and SSK an inconvenience fee. Why so cheap when it comes to your rigger? SparkyMy idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
Thanatos340 1 #9 June 17, 2004 Not a Cheep Issue at all. I dont mind paying for a full repack. Like I said, It costs less to get the rig the repacked again next week than it would be to rent gear for this weekend. The Money is definately not the issue. I just wasnt sure if would be a Huge hassle or not for the rigger to have to go back into the rig next week to install the cypres.
Chrisky 0 #10 June 17, 2004 Here's what i imagine, not being a rigger myself: The Cypres case usually sits in a pocket at the bottom of your reserve container. Your rigger would have to pop the reserve, take out the Freebag, install the Cypres, cutter, cables etc. and then put the freebag and RPC back in, if he can do so with keeping everything in order. He doesn't necessarily have to do the actual packing of the canopy into the freebag again. So much for my imagination. The mind is like a parachute - it only works once it's open. alan 1 #11 June 18, 2004 Your profile says you are still a Student. Is your S&TA OK with a student jumping without an AAD? Just wondering because the last time I checked, the BSRs said an AAD was required on all student jumps. I would advise you to get some input from your DZO/S&TA on this one.alan
skydiver30960 0 #12 June 18, 2004 Diablopilot is right on this one... it's completely up to the rigger. He may not be comfortable with shuffling his repack around during the installation, or he may just not be comfortable with where to draw the line on the "repack or not to repack" question and finds that "opening = repack" is the most black and white way of handling the situation. Hooknswoop 19 #13 June 18, 2004 QuoteDiablopilot is right on this one... it's completely up to the rigger. Of course the rigger can decide/choose to re-pack the reserve if they feel necessary, but there is no requirement to re-pack it for a Cypres installation if the same rigger that packed it installs the Cypres. I didn't say he couldn't, just that he doesn't have to. Derek
riggerrob 643 #14 June 18, 2004 I have done this on dozens of occasions when a Cypres was late returning from a 4-year check. A week or two after the initial inspection & repack, I just pull the ripcord and gently set the freebag (& pilotchute) aside while installing the Cypres. Then I reclose the container "in the normal manner" and charge the customer half the cost of a full-blow I&R. Note that the repack cycle is still based on the initial I&R. In this scenario, I have never thought about opening the freebag, much less doing a full-blown I&R. Why???????? PhreeZone 20 #16 June 19, 2004 I've always had nothing but great experiences dealing with SSK. But in a past life I did a lot of shipping for a company and I'll tell you that once you key in an item into UPS, they won't let you cancel it. So you would have had to pay the ground fee, then the overnight fee (if UPS would even do it if they are not an overnight center) and how would they bill you for the "extra" money you wanted to pay them? It all have to appear on the ledger in some category....Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
