"Too Tall" newbie in Round Rock, TX

Recommended Posts

Howdy all!

I did a bucket list tandem for my 39th birthday in 2011 at Skydive Long Island and found my only regret was not having done it 20 years earlier! I went back for 2 more tandems in 2012 followed by FJC and found I tipped the scales just a little too much. It doesn't help any that I'm 6'5" tall (my TI Rich kept calling me "Too Tall" since none of their TI's was even close in height.)

Life then got in the way and we relocated to TX for work. Two years have passed, much life has happened in the middle and I'm finally back on track, dropping weight and looking forward to redoing a FJC here in Texas.

I've been up to Skydive Temple. People there were really friendly. As a new guy to the sport, who has only jumped at one place with an enormous area around it, the facilities were intimidating, but it definitely had that "everyone knows everyone" feel to it. I liked that.

I have yet to get down to Skydive San Marcos, but will be headed there in May with a coworker who wants to do a tandem. I figure it'll give me a chance to check it out and meet people.

I got directed to DZ.com when I was told that I might want to look for a large main due to my size and stumbled on the forums. I've been a regular lurker for some time, but figured I'd introduce myself now that I'm finally getting into shape to jump.

There is a certain irony that I'm losing weight, eating healthier and getting into shape all to take part in a sport that some would consider to be bad for my health. Yes, those people have never been in freefall before. It's ok to pity them.

Kind of long-winded, but it's slow at the office today. :)
Nice to meet you all!

You'll love the folks in Texas.
All great DZ's and hospitality.
And, for informational purposes; TallGuy is Too Tall at 6'8" whereas, I am a paltry 6'6" :D
We walk among them.

Nobody has time to listen; because they're desperately chasing the need of being heard.

I used to jump at San Macros and now (for logistical reasons) jump at Temple.

Both are good DZs and I wound not hesitate to recommend either for a FJC and continued jumping.

Best of luck, and remember when bring your beer you can't go wrong with Shiner.

If you end up jumping at San Marcos you will meet one of the best jump pilots out there. He sadly left my home DZ to start flying for San Marcos. Perfect spots and a great guy. Just tell Andrew that Steve from Monroe told you about him. Good luck either way, as I know nothing about Temple.

Thanks for the advice everyone!

I'm working my tail off (almost literally!) to get down enough to jump. Life keeps throwing curveballs, but I'm getting better at dodging. I am so looking forward to the recreational use of gravity again!

Hey TooTall,

Welcome back to skydiving! Skydive Spaceland is a little farther from you in Houston, but if you fancy a short trip we'd love to meet you. We also train 7 days a week, so if you want to focus that training in a short time, we can hook you up. :)

Skydiving is a great way to celebrate being healthier, for sure! Kudos for pursuing health!
