freeasabird 0 #1 June 29, 2004 I have been shopping for a new (first) rig and have heard several people tell me how they value a rig by "parting" it out. In other words, $XXX for the main, $XXX for the container, etc. When it comes to the AAD (i.e. Cypres), everyone says to figure about $100 for every year of service left on it. However, no one distinguishes between the value of the old Cypres 1 versus the newer Cypres 2. Are both worth $100 per year of service left in it? I have a specific example to illustrate: A guy is selling a rig which has a 2 year old Cypres 1 in it. The Cypres needs new batteries. He says it is worth $1000 towards the value of the complete rig since it has 10 years of life left in it. However, I disagree. My reason for disagreeing is this: Why should I spend $1000 for something that is no longer the latest and greatest technology, which has 10 years left on it (vs. 12 years for the new Cypres 2), and for which I will need to spend $75 to $100 for new batteries every 2 years, including today (vs. every 4 years for Cypres 2)? I don't hold with people's immediate assumption that the Cpyres 2 is an "improvement" on the Cypres 1. The only practical difference is that it is water resistant, and trust me, you wont want to be getting your gear wet anyway. It offers a slight financial improvement in that it requires battery changes half as often. Thats litterally it. There's nothing wrong with a cypres 1 if it's priced right, but it is worth taking account of its running costs vs. the cypres 2 running costs in this decision. Believe it or not parts are getting hard to come by for the original Cypres1's and Airtec sought out new suppliers for the parts to make a new unit. Cypres2's have improved circuit boards, new contoller/screen, better wiring, and general refinements from 12 years manufactoring the Cypres. About the only things unchanged are the air pressure sensor and the cutter. mr2mk1g 10 #6 June 29, 2004 Accepted, but are they really differences you are actually going to notice? They're both going to fire at 750 at the same speed and with an acceptable reliability factor. I don't see any practical advantage in the newer model but for possible price differences/water resistance. Of course, all things being equal you'd take the 2 because as you say it's made with slightly more modern components. But the simple existence of a newer model doesn't immediately mean the old one is suddenly unsafe. It sometimes seems like that is being suggested and I think it’s a false concept to propagate. Where you can save jump money... is there really a reason why someone should spend more to get essentially the same thing? Samurai136 0 #7 June 29, 2004 You're in the driver's seat. The seller has over valued his used cypres. If you go for the deal he could buy the new Cypres 2 at the low cost of $200. I'd offer him $600. He can try and find another buyer but the clock is ticking on the value of his cypres. Personally, if I was planning to spend a grand on an AAD I'd buy the cypres 2. Someone else commented they feel the cypres 1 and 2 are qualitatively the same. Sure. All things being equal (and you've got the $$) buy the cypres 2.
