meekerboy 0 #1 July 12, 2004 On a recent jump, one of my lines was cut when it snagged on something sharp at the landing site. I have just replaced it but was interested in knowing what length I should replace it with. The canopy has around 100 jumps on it, so there will be some stretching of the Dacron lines already. The obvious choice is to replace it with a line of equal length to the other side.... However, I also know that lines stretch a bit after the first couple of jumps. In the end I made it 1cm shorter than the other side. Has anyone else been in this situation.
TomAiello 26 #2 July 12, 2004 I might consider relining the whole canopy, but that may be a bit overboard. Have you called the manufacturer to ask them? They ought to be able to answer with better specifics.-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
TomAiello 26 #3 July 12, 2004 I'm also going to leave a pointer here and move this thread to Gear and Rigging, to see if a real rigger over there might provide some guidance. What kind of canopy is it? Since it's a BASE canopy, I'm assuming 7 cells, F-111, Dacron lines.-- Tom Aiello Tom@SnakeRiverBASE.com SnakeRiverBASE.com
councilman24 37 #4 July 12, 2004 One option that used to be used routinely and I'd still consider is just replacing the the broken line and it's corresponding opposite on the other side. Then, while might not quite match other at least it will be symetrical. Some lines stretch while others shrink. Two new one the same length will change in parallel.I'm old for my age. darkwing 5 #5 July 12, 2004 It also makes a difference what line it is. The further outboard the line is, the more effect a difference in length will have. Was the replaced line a complete A-B or C-D line? Since you have already replaced it I suspect your question is moot. Have you jumped it? If it flies OK I wouldn't worry about it. After a few jumps check the length again, and maybe do some adjusting. -- Jeff My Skydiving History
meekerboy 0 #6 July 13, 2004 The line is an outside A line on a FOX VTEC 245. I have made the replacement line now, but will send an email to BR to check things out. Thanks, Meeker
