cvfd1399 0 #1 August 1, 2004 I already have a neptune that I am about to put in my Z1 as an audible then I need a visual. Which of the 2 Alti III or FT-50 do you think is the best buy. By best buy I mean reliability, easy to read, mounting system. I am gonna buy used.
towerrat 0 #2 August 1, 2004 My FT-50 has held up OK for about 4 years, but is no longer accurate. The needle sticks and it is in general need of repair. It was inexpensive. pilotdave 0 #3 August 1, 2004 You can save a little money with an FT-50 but you can't go wrong with an altimaster. The FT-50 has a little bigger face than the older altimasters, but I think the new ones are about as big. And you can get a free custom face plate on an alti-3 if you want something that looks a little different. Dave
diablopilot 2 #4 August 1, 2004 The Alti Galaxy (formerly the alti 3) is the best mechanical Altimeter on the market. The service is great, the glow in the dark face works perfect on night jumps (I just got down from one an hour ago) and the quality can't be beat. Comes in nice colors too....---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.
cvfd1399 0 #5 August 1, 2004 Sounds good. I wanted cheaper, but now with the screw on lens 30k operating range, and custom face I will go with the galaxy or alti
slotperfect 7 #6 August 1, 2004 I agree with JP that the Galaxy is tops. I believe the upper limit of the operating range is 18K though . . . I believe the Stratosphere model is the one that is accurate to 30K.Arrive Safely John
koz2000 1 #7 August 1, 2004 Yep, the stratosphere is accurate to 30K, but the regular galaxy will pick back up at 18k and will be accurate. The neptune at this time is not accurate if it goes about 18k,, according to Alti they're working on the software to make it work above 18k. Miami 0 #8 August 2, 2004 Heck...I'm still jumping an FT-40 (the version before the FT-50) as my personal altimeter...it has held up great over the thousands of jumps I have made with it. At work I have an Alti3 with the glow face...when my FT-40 finally kicks the bucket I will probably buy an Alti3 with the glow face...but it depends on what is available at the time. Hope this helps...Miami
DancingFlame 0 #9 August 2, 2004 I prefer Barigo altimeter Costs less. Solid design.
skydiverton 0 #10 August 2, 2004 Got a Barigo, cheap altimeter, Already lasts for 10 years (1300 jumps) without big problems ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Using your droque to gain stability is a bad habit, Especially when you are jumping a sport rig
kallend 2,027 #11 August 2, 2004 My FT50 has been dropped a bunch of times and now reads 10% low. I just deal with it.... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.
rushmc 23 #12 August 2, 2004 Look at the Free Fall Assesories altimeters. I have seen none better and they make great custom faces."America will never be destroyed from the outside, if we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves." masterrig 1 #13 August 2, 2004 I have a Barigo (15-yrs.) and never, a bit of trouble with it. One of our jumpers has one that got packed-up in someone elses container and was 'lost' for about 6-months. My wife found it in a field near the DZ. The owner cleaned it up and had our pilot 'test' it for him. He's still using it. I believe, they are high quality... low price. For what it's worth. meltdown 0 #14 August 2, 2004 I like the Galaxy. I've been using one for about a year (me and my wife take turns with it). I bought an FT-50 as a second alti and it's not nearly as accurate, so I returned it and got another Galaxy.
koz2000 1 #15 August 3, 2004 I was wrong, the neptune is good to 30K. I guess I could read the alti-2 web site.______________________________________________ - Does this small canopy make my balls look big? - J. Hayes -

David had a great deal for people recently getting off student status and if your jump blurb is correct you might qualify. I have one and it is the best altimeter I have owned, hands down....go check them out and ask about the student offer and if its still going... FYI, I dont work for them in any way I just am VERY happy with the altimeter I have frem them... Scott C."He who Hesitates Shall Inherit the Earth!"
