NWFlyer 2 #4 March 22, 2011 Link didn't work. Seems to be some weirdness with the special characters in the URL - I can't make it work right either. This will get you to the right category, currently it's the top (March 2011) article. http://parachutistonline.com/category/safety_training/rating_corner"There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. wmw999 2,447 #5 March 22, 2011 The link didn't work for me (took me to a blank "Parachutist" page), but if you just search for "Flare" on that page you'll find it in the march 2011 directory. Sometimes results of those interactive searches don't copy and paste so well. Wendy P.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

pchapman 279 #7 March 22, 2011 Very brief summary of article: Repeat "not yet" to the student during the last 100 ft, then do a 3-stage flare. More could have been said to discuss the points made and alternatives, so it isn't the final word. But the general ideas have merit even if other DZ's would implement the specifics differently. DZ's do have success with a multi stage flare. And there is value to talking to the student shortly before the flare command, so that they aren't just listening to static and wondering if you see them or the radio is out, while they get more nervous with the ground approaching.
