SkydiveMO 0 #2 August 17, 2004 Nope no pros or cons with safety or use, just a matter of looks and price.
FrogNog 1 #3 August 17, 2004 And what you like. I like a bigger handle, personally. -=-=-=-=- Pull.
johnny1488 1 #4 August 18, 2004 I am very happy with the monkey fist that I bought from Skycat (kelli) I like the feel of it especially in winter with gloves. Johnny --"This ain't no book club, we're all gonna die!" Mike Rome
mr2mk1g 10 #5 August 18, 2004 A rigger once told me he did not recommend monkey's fists and wouldn't sell them at his loft. His point was the ball would oscillate in the airflow and the extra weight combined with a lose BOC pocket could pull the pilot chute out and cause a premature. Apparently he’d seen it before and wanted to warn people of the problem. That said; no one else seems to agree that it’s a problem and whilst I see exactly what he’s on about, another answer to the problem would be to properly maintain your BOC. meatbomb 0 #6 August 18, 2004 Same goes for hackeys, which is why the only throwaway choice for me would be a PVC toggle...it stays put... Edited to add: I jump a pull-out pud... The Wings has a similar handle which stays put for throwaway...like Matt says below...--- Swoopert, CS-Aiiiiiii! Piccies
mr2mk1g 10 #7 August 18, 2004 Or a pud... I went for pud which stays attached to the rig exactly where I put it.
LivingLegend 0 #8 August 18, 2004 Just after I did AFF I went for my PVC toggle and got my thumb stuck down the middle of the tube. I had to let go, go back to to stable flat and retry. I always wondered if this wasnt a dangersous design? ________________________________________ 1.618 !
Tonto 1 #9 August 19, 2004 The lighter the handle on your PC is, the safer it is, both from an intentional and avoiding unintentional deployment point of view. I have PVC toggle or Freefly handles on my rigs. Best I ever saw was a practice golf ball as a handle. Light, but with none of the "thumb stuck" possibilities (which one has to confess is pretty hard to do..) tIt's the year of the Pig.

All our Student Sidewinders have plastic "wiffle balls" (practice golf balls) on their main pilot chutes. One of my rigs has a monkey-fist (that I tied) and my other rig has a PVC pipe. Some of the newer, stiffer freefly handles are mighty fine. I base my decisions on whether I can locate a handle - by feel - while wearing my winter gloves. Hint: I have frozen my fingers so many times that my sense of touch is not very good on cold days. I always thought that hacky handles were a silly fashion statement, but I guess it depends on what you are used to. For example, I was mighty glad when (circa 1988) Strong Enterprises replaced their silly soft drogue handle with a piece of PVC pipe wrapped in Cordura. Maybe I am just too old a dog to learn new tricks. Hee! Hee!
 LivingLegend 0 #11 August 19, 2004 Oh, that sounds perfect. Golf being such a shit game thats a much better use for my practice golf balls. How can it be safely attached ? ________________________________________ 1.618 !
