Commencement Decorum

In the last twenty years or so, when attending graduation ceremonies, I have noticed that when the graduate walks across the stage to receive their diploma it is common for friends and family of the graduate to cheer, whoop it up, and generally raise hell when said graduate's name is called out.

Is this OK or is it not fitting with the occasion?

Graduated in 2012. They asked the audience to hold their applause til the end. Of course, there were a few asshat families that would still cheer.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks that. I think it puts graduation on par with a T-ball game.
