IJskonijn 45 #2 February 22, 2017 One in just under two years :). Still on my first '97 Nissan Micra, small enough to fit in my back pocket and big enough to get me where I want to go. Also, it's got bloody good fuel economy for a 20-year old car, I'm averaging 18 km/L.

I've only bought one brand-new off the lot a 1984 Ford Ranger in 1985 paid $3995 and they gave me a free tank of gas I'm 62, and on my 3rd car. Two new, and one nearly new. I've spent well under 2% of my income buying cars. I'm about to try to get my FAA medical back (post heart surgery) and get back to flying. If I do that, I'll likely keep my 2001 Passat for another few years. If I can't get the medical, I may buy a car that costs more than the rest I've ever owned, even adjusted for inflation. I could buy both the plane and the nice car (I have basically lived on half what I earned my entire career), but my inherent frugality won't let me. I get the bug for a flashy car once in a while, but I'd rather work less, spend more on wine, or do a hundred other things than have a more expensive car. It is also nice not to carry collision insurance, and know that I could re-buy the same car I am driving about 1000 times, if need be, without severely cramping my style. BillyVance 34 #6 February 22, 2017 I believe my number is 13, which includes a few vehicles bought jointly with my wife. Two of them have gone over 200K miles and one is still going strong at over 277K miles - a 2001 Toyota Tundra, the only one I ever bought brand new. I've also owned a 1975 Porsche 914 and a couple of Ford Mustangs. The other current vehicle is a 2012 Honda Odyssey that has 110K miles on it now"Mediocre people don't like high achievers, and high achievers don't like mediocre people." - SIX TIME National Champion coach Nick Saban
wmw999 2,452 #7 February 22, 2017 I specialized in heaps before my first marriage; 4 cars in 7 years. Combined cost for all four under $2000. 6 since then (only the ones I mostly drove when married, but my first husband and I swapped a lot). I'm on my fourth motorcycle. My current car was bought new in 2006; it's got plenty of life still. Wendy P.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. JohnMitchell 16 #15 February 22, 2017 '64 Mustang - engine died, sold as a project car to someone with more money than a broke teenager. '72 Triumph Spitfire - super fun car, still running strong when I sold it before a big move '79 Toyota PU truck - First of many "practical" vehicles '80 Toyota Tercel - another practical car. '89 Plymouth Voyager - 2 kids now. Need a good, slightly used minivan. '96 Ford Escort - First new car I ever bought. It would be my faithful commuter car for the next 18 years. Air conditioning, 5 speed. A car only an accountant could love. '99 Plymouth Voyager - Brand new minivan for all the kids. 2012 Fiat 500 Pop - Most the kids are gone, and Vskydiver wants a "fun" car. She picked it out and we wrote a check. 2015 Dodge Caravan - Sheesh, the '99 Voyager died of transmission failure, so I needed a new vehicle that does a little of everything. Bought a year-old minivan off the lot. Once again, boring but handy as hell.
BillyVance 34 #16 February 22, 2017 Let's see... I've had... (edited to fix the chronological order of two vehicles) 1964 Buick Special - It was grandma's car. It only had 50K miles on it in 1984 when she gave up driving and gave it to me. I ran it up to about 95K miles while in college before the transmission croaked and Dad donated it to Goodwill. 1985 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera - Took this to college in my last year there and crashed it running off a snow covered road in the mountains. 1983 Mazda B2000 pickup truck and camper shell - It came in handy at the time having to collect all my stuff from college and drive back home. I can't remember what happened to it though, some kind of engine issue but it was well over 100K miles. 1987 Nissan Sentra - Dad sold it to me after he got the timing belt service done on it at 60K miles and I drove it up to 135K before mechanical issues left it undrivable and the repair bill wasn't worth it. 1993 Ford Mustang Hatchback - It was okay, it became available at the right time when the Sentra went kaput. A neighbor of my girlfriend at the time had died and his family wanted to sell it. Was only 2 years old with 18K miles on it and got a good deal for it. Drove it to skydiving boogies for a few years and sold it to my roommate whose girlfriend needed a car for college. It had 85K miles on it. Later they told me they ran it up to 298K miles before the engine gave out. 1975 Porsche 914 2.0 - I bought this car from Washington state and had it transported here, only $3200 and it only had 50K miles on it. Great fun car to drive, but high maintenance. Fortunately I had a foreign auto shop that did great work for reasonable rates. The low center of gravity with that rear engine car (the engine was directly behind the seats and the car had both a front and rear trunk to store stuff, and the car top was removable. Just unclip it, and with the help of a friend, lift it off and store in the rear trunk. I got it because a friend had one and I was riding in it with him when someone pulled out in front of us when we were going 55mph and we fucking creamed it in the rear quarter panel. Spun it out about 270 degrees. It was bashed in good, but the damage to my friend's 914 looked minimal, a little crumpled up front, and nobody was hurt. The impact did shear the bolts holding the engine or transmission in place and that dropped it down on the street and we drug to a stop a block away since the brakes got taken out in the collision. It was kind of funny, while we were still going, another convertible pulled up with a couple in it and the driver asked us if we were okay, and we both just nodded and they drove off. I was glad to have had my 914 at the time because my '93 Ford Mustang got stolen in Tennessee so I had something to fall back on for a week until the Mustang was recovered and returned. 1996 Ford Mustang - I liked this one better but I had a lead foot then and kept getting speeding tickets because it was red. 2001 Toyota Tundra - traded the '96 Mustang in for this. Bought the truck brand new, only 6 miles on the odometer. Still going strong at over 277K miles. It's pretty well beat up though, I can point to each dent and tell what happened. But as for the motor, you can't beat a Toyota, they just keep going. Wife had her 1996 Mazda Protege when we got married. Ran it up to 221K miles before donating it to a needy young mom who used the money she saved up for it to make repairs to the engine. She crashed it a few months later. 2003 Toyota MR-2 Spyder - This was my wife's impulse buy, brand new. A lot of fun to drive. Went over 100 mph a few times with ease, and the sequential transmission was easy to use. I was going 120 mph in it one day on an empty highway just to see what that was like and it was just unbelievably smooth. Just didn't feel like that fast. Then I coasted before the curve started and was still coasting at 90 mph when I passed the state trooper... fuuuuck. I didn't tell him what I was doing earlier. We ended up trading it in for a.... 2005 used Pontiac Vibe - Wife was pregnant with our first baby and the fun car had to go. In hindsight, we both hated this car, it sucked and didn't have a whole lot of power. When the second baby was enroute, we traded this in for a.... 2005 used Honda Odyssey - Loved this one, plenty of room for all the baby shit. Drove it up to I think at least 180K miles before the automatic sliding door on the driver's side started malfunctioning and when I tried to force it shut, it came right off the track, and just 2 days before we were supposed to go on vacation. We immediately traded it in the next day for a.... 2012 used Honda Odyssey - only 18K miles on it. Still going strong now at 110K miles. Only 21 months of payments left on it and we're home free. The Tundra has been paid off for over a decade. I'll run it til it dies. I've just passed 110K miles on it, and though it has lots of little dings and body stuff falling apart, it's hard to justify a new(er) car given how little I drive it (city living and live close to my office, so walking/taking public transit is more cost / time effective most of the time). I might still buy something different this year, but I won't buy new. 1986-1989 - teenage years, used family cars or didn't have a car 1989-1992 - a 1980 Toyota Tercel that I bought used. After selling the Mustang, I bought a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo when I turned 16. Just passed 150,000 miles on her and she's still running strong. I take pride in the fact I still have the same car since 2006. I take good care of it, and hardly drive since I live in the city.
