wmw999 2,476 #1 June 5, 2016 I'm about to set out backpacking. Full pack weight, including water (2 bottles and a camelbak), food for nine days+, tent, and even camp shoes. Not too shabby. skymama 37 #2 June 5, 2016 At least you're used to carrying a heavy rig on your back! Good luck and have fun on your adventure. Come back and tell us how it goes. She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon

rmarshall234 14 #9 June 14, 2016 That's great! When I did a lot of backpacking the magic number for me was 40. If I could keep my pack under 40 lbs it made all the difference in the world. By the time you are into that 3rd day and you've transitioned into a machine,

wmw999 2,476 #11 June 16, 2016 Back a day late; I kept hearing such good things about the last section that I hiked it extra slow. I'm glad I did; last night I stayed at a shelter with a spectacular view, and hung out with two 18-year-olds from Mississippi who decided to home the AT when they were bored last year. Unlike most 17-year-olds' plans, they made this happen; graduated early, researched, and are now nearly 1600 miles in. Damn impressive. And they said all five Mississippians they've met on the trail are also carrying fishing poles! Also an ultra marathoner who has run down Everest, as well as a chiropractor (trail name Captain Crunch) and his son, out for some bonding. And lots of other nice people, too. But the temperature is about to get about ten degrees hotter, and hiking flat Connecticut in 80 degree weather just doesn't sound like fun. Especially going to bed in my sweaty PJ's, of my sweaty clothes. So -- I'm baaack! And I only saw one bear, no running required Wendy P. rmarshall234 14 #15 June 16, 2016 >decided to home the AT ... Being a westerner I've never been on the Appalachian Trail but my sister has a bakery in Roan Mountain TN and she says people call her from the AT and ask to have a pizza delivered when they come through!
