ryoder 1,590 #1 October 7, 2015 I stumbled across this recording of the actual Zappa concert that ended in fire, (referenced in the "Deep Purple" song). Listen to the last two minutes to hear him telling people to exit the building. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lpFeopjJhI "There are only three things of value: younger women, faster airplanes, and bigger crocodiles" - Arthur Jones. peek 21 #5 October 8, 2015 promise5Last two minutes??? Crud I couldn't listen to the first two! WHY would anyone willingly listen to that at all? That was a live recording made in a time where there was a lot of experimenting going on in music. I can't blame you if you don't take to it immediately (or at all!). Search for "frank zappa apostrophe" in YouTube. It was one of the more "commercial" albums. You need to listen to the lyrics and have a sense of humor to enjoy Frank Zappa. You also need to enjoy all of the style and time signature changes within songs. Many people just don't like that kind of thing. Many people listen to some of it and say, "I don't get it." wmw999 2,537 #6 October 8, 2015 Zappa was possibly the only artist I went to see twice on my own when I was young. The second time, I brought my younger brothers, and my father came as a chaperone . He wasn't favorably impressed... Wendy P. There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. dpreguy 14 #8 October 8, 2015 Listened to a few minutes of it, at various time intervals. First time, as far as I know, I've ever listened to that guy. Music? Not even close. Sounds like a bunch of chimpanzees in a ball bearing factory. People actually paid to hear that crap?

I didn't listen to the clip, but I saw him twice in concert when I was in high (very high) school. One helluva musician and band leader. Some of his stuff was cacophony, some of it genius. You just had to pick through it.
ryoder 1,590 #15 October 10, 2015 For people who think they don't like Zappa, try these two instrumental pieces which I would categorize as more jazz than rock: "Watermelon in Easter Hay":https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9DqykUsqRY "Black Napkins": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNkl1avYXRM"There are only three things of value: younger women, faster airplanes, and bigger crocodiles" - Arthur Jones. But that's OK, it's not the kind of jazz that is like having someone shit in your ear. It's easy to lose sight of the fact that all this was going on during the birth of rock and roll. Zappa was very much experimenting with blues and jazz and keeping the bits that sounded good to him. His experimental albums are more underground. But when he put the gym sock over here, they were more commercial. No matter what they did, though, their band was always incredibly tight. Take Nine Types of Industrial Pollution, for example. Instrumental, odd background, awesome damn guitar work. He also experimented with The Tango, and even did a cover of Stairway to Heaven and Bolero. On the blue side, he did a cover of Steal Away. That's some really nice guitar right there.I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?
