I've heard of those kinds of accidents before, where each plane is in the blind spot of the other. The plane below can't see above and behind him because of his wing, and the plane above can't see the one below because of his fuselage. This usually comes about with a high-wing plane on the bottom, and a low-wing plane on top, where the wing location restricts visibility. It's a miracle no one was killed.

I usta live next to a small airfield that had a similar crash; two planes on final, one above, one below, not seeing each other. These two pancaked in a field next to my house so hard they were mostly two dimensional.

Seriously, this kind of thing happens quite a bit. There are about 25 midair collisions, almost always between small VFR aircraft, every year in this country, usually within 5 miles of the airport.

And people wonder why I jump out.
