Suspect Gear on E-bay

Recommended Posts

I am a newbie, so I have been watching for gear quite some time. I just saw this on e-bay, and I think it is questionable. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7106455000
I saw the exact same stuff about 2 weeks ago. The description and the pics are the exact same.
I contacted the seller,
"Dear mug00new, Why are you selling your gear? Have you gotten out of the sport?"
He replied:
"i need money, let me knwo if you want to buy it?"
So... buyer beware!
Jason

p.s. if this is legit, and I just got spooked, I do appologize to the seller.

I dunno, it looks legit to me, considering how he's selling a bunch of other skydiving gear with it (he couldn't have ripped all of it off).

Most importantly, he lists the serial numbers of the container, main and reserve--that's not something you'd want to do if you've stolen the gear.

I guess I misspoke... I don't think it is stolen gear, I do however think that this ad is an exact copy (word for word) of another set of gear that was sold a few weeks ago. I am still trying to search for that listing, but I can't find it. I also find it suspect when the guy just had the account set up today, and just says I need money. I know we all do, but come on.
On top of that, the original posting was sold for around $1800 (if i remember right) and if it was the same person, they would have had atleast one comment on their name.
That is why I think it is suspect.

Could the winning bid have been rejected as too low the first time? Would that explain why it's back on Ebay for another shot?

It could be... however this seller was registered on October 7th. That is today. I last saw a listing like this 2-3 weeks ago.
I originally thought it was the guy who bought the gear, but like I said, he would have had feedback. It it were the seller from before, he would have had been a member for a few weeks at least.
I have sent him an additional e-mail asking for more pics.
If he can provide other pics... then it is probably legit. Otherwise, who knows.

It's always a good idea to be suspicious, or at least aware of stolen gear on ebay. I would like to thank everyone who called and emailed me today to help me locate my stolen gear. It was listed on ebay, and several of you realized the description matched the items I listed on the "stolen gear" section of Dropzone.com.

Thanks to all who keep an eye out for each other.

Dave

Cool... it would be nice if my stolen rig from 1997 would show up somewhere... but I've long since given up on it...

Earlier today I saw a set that 'was in a car that a guy bought' Was it that set?
All that I can remember was that it was red.

I doubt it... it was an Infinity container, mostly navy blue with some red and white on the back. The main was a Triathlon 135 and the reserve a Tempo 135, I think, might have been a 150. It was in my car, which was stolen too. I got the car back a week later, minus the gear. This was in McMinnville, TN in October 1997 when we had the Dive Rite world record star event...

A quick check into USPA's website for the stolen gear database turned up my original gear listing, note that the 135 listed here looks similar to the 120 I'm flying in my profile picture, except the blue was royal, and colors were R, W, B, R, B, W and R -

Stolen from a car in McMinnville, Tennessee, October 18, 1997. Infinity I-3 container, SN 5061, royal blue with red and white main flap, "Billy" and "Alabama Gang" embroidered on right front panel, articulated harness, B-12 snaps, BOC; Triathlon 135 , SN 162638, red, white and blue; Tempo 150 reserve, SN 159935.

USPA's stolen gear listing goes back a long way. Use it to cross-check anything that looks suspicious. http://www.uspa.org/news/notices/stolen.htm The oldest listing goes back to February 1994.

Before buying or selling gear, I ALWAYS ask home DZ, USPA# or license #. I have had all kinds of crazy scams hit my web site.

I would suggest to anyone shopping eBay to ask a home DZ and then call and verify.

Do be aware of e bay rigs, and listings that are too good to be true. I know of one that was a fraud, for a FACT in the last week. I purchased a rig on e bay, 2 weeks ago, when UPS delivered it all was well. Then two weeks later, I see MY rig on ebay, The seller had been a member for 4 days, it even had my serial #s for the main/reserve/AAD, so IMO the seller cut/pasted my old winning auction page onto his new listing and was attempting to rip off whoever he could. Make sure you know who you are dealing with on the internet. or it could be painfull to the pocket book.

Ask the guy to set up an escow account for this auction and see what kind of response you get. I setup ecrows on all items I sell over $500. I would suspect this ad as stated, new account, no feedback.

I fired a quick Q to the seller and he came back with the fact that it was fitted with an "AMD Cutter" as I suspected.

I then filled in an e-bay fraud report and it was down within an hour or two.

Anyone know where I can buy an AMD cutter? My rig doesn't have one and I just lurve to have all the mod cons.
