DJL 235 #1 October 19, 2004 I'm thinking up a bit of art for my camera holder. What's a good type of paint to use? The effect I want is a fading spray and a printed design over that. I want to keep the finish of the black woven fiberglass, so no scuffing to make an easier surface."I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
jrcrackers 0 #2 October 19, 2004 I use automotive paint. It holds up very well. It's a bit hard to use if you don't have much experience painting though

If it's a BH helmet it's not fiber glass it's carbon fiber, slight difference I don't see how your going to keep the carbon fiber look if you apply paint to the helmet unless you mean to only paint portions of it. In which case you still can rough the surface up to be painted and then apply a clear coat afterwards."It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING
DJL 235 #4 October 20, 2004 Nice buckets. If I rough and clear-coat the whole thing how will the sections show up that I only clear-coat. It won't be so much painting as splattering, so the canvas is important."I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
Kris 0 #5 October 20, 2004 I used automotive paint, thinned down a bit, and a Testor's airbrush gun. I was able to lay down a coat that looked good, but still let the carbon fiber weave underneath show through.Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™

cderham 0 #7 October 20, 2004 I use automotive paint as well. If you use a candy color (transparant) then the carbon fiber look will show thru with the color you desire. Also the candy deepins the look of the carbon fiber and makes it look really cool in the sun. You can also add some metal flake to a coat under the candy a light dusting will make it shimmer in the sun. I have painted a couple of carbon fiber helmets this way and they look awsome. Auto paint is much more durable then model or hobby paint. and a good clear coat will save a helmet from needing repainted as often form the abuse we put them thru. SkymonkeyONE 4 #8 October 20, 2004 Scuffing over the entire helmet will not preclude you from still being able to see the pattern of the weave so long as all you are doing is shooting clear over it.
