British violinist to represent Thailand in giant slolom at Olympics

Recommended Posts

1) How many turns can one headline take?

2) Some people make me feel like a comparative failure in life.

She is lovely. She has been a world-class violinist since she was 13. She's competing in the Olympics at the age of 35 in the giant slolom.

That was just the first paragraph of the article.
I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet..

But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.

Here she is, Vanessa-Mae Vanakorn Nicholson, born in Singapore and raised in the UK, she has been skiing since the age of 4. At first I was skeptical. But it's legit. According to the FIS she is qualified to compete at Sochi. She'll probably finish many many seconds off of the pace. But if she meets the minimum standards set out by the FIS, who are we to say she should not be there.

Qualifications to compete in skiing at Sochi

That's interesting. I'm not sure how I feel about her representing a country she wasn't born in and apparently hasn't lived in, though. Then again, the Olympics aren't where people look for integrity or logic, I guess.

Her father is a British Hotelier with Thai ancestry. When you come from well off families, the authorities tend to look the other way with these sorts of things. But the FIS is strict when it comes to minimum talent required to race. So we know she is more than just some British violinist with rich parents. She has enough skiing skills for the FIS to allow her to compete.

PS: there is a bloke from Zimbabwe who is qualified to compete. The difference here is that he was born in Zimbabwe. But he left at age 2 and has been living in Switzerland ever since. He is however the first athlete to ever represent Zimbabwe at the Winter Games.

Kinda like a canuckian singing the Star Spangled Banner . . .

Absolutely. I'll never be a world class anything. . .:S:D

To excel at so many things is amazing. Wonder if she'd like to take the AFF Class?:)
Does that mean you are all healed up? :)

Personally I think the country she lives in, or is a citizen of (is she?) , should be a bigger factor than where daddy was born.

International sport and nationalism increasingly makes less and less sense...the boundaries are just too porous.

You have to be a citizen to represent that country. I'm pretty sure she would be, through whatever requirements Thailand has.

I'm pretty sure the process in every country goes about like this,

person: I'd like to represent your country in the Olympics in sports that you've never had athletes competing in before.
country: Sign here and you'll have your citizenship.
Your rights end where my feelings begin.

And that was so much fun. :)
I'm one x ray away from being unrestricted. They even told me I could jump. I'm just not going to do AFF until I can really rock and roll. :)

For the trivia folks: Four US of A jumpers represented Lichenstein at the '64 World Championships.

Nothing new here,

Please don't take this the wrong way. I am really not trying to slam someone's efforts in the Olympics. But maybe Vanessa Vanakorn should have stuck to being a World Class violinist because she isn't that good of a skier when it comes to competing on the world stage. She finished in last place out of all the people who completed both runs in the Women's Giant Slalom event today, 50 seconds off of the combine two run pace of the race winner Tina Maze and 11 seconds slower than the 2nd to last place finisher.

Now I am aware of the challenges of Alpine Ski racing, the courses do get chewed up especially for the late starters and Vanessa had the 87th of 90 start position on the first run of the Women's Giant Slalom and started 67th of 67 skiers on the 2nd run (race winner Maze started 1st on the 1st run and started 30th on the 2nd run). But you only need to watch the video of all the racers to see that Vanessa is a pretty tentative and cautious.

You know what you call the person who comes in last in the Olympic Downhill Ski event?

An Olympic Downhill Skier.

Wish I could claim I was in the Olympics.

Actually she's NOT a Downhill skier. She competed in the Women's Giant Slalom Alpine Skiing event. There is no way they would have let her ski in the Downhill event. There are thousands of club level Giant Slalom skiers who would have come down the course faster than she did if only they too had been allowed to compete. But each country is only allowed to enter 4 competitors per event. Watch the footage of the race. She's easy to find. She is the 3rd last competitor to come down the course in the 1st run and the last competitor to come down in the 2nd run. 50 seconds slower than the winner of the race and 11 seconds slower than the 2nd to last place competitor.
