A friend of mine works for Atlas (the company operating this DL747) and flies the 747 and the dreamlifter, and when I saw this this morning I called him right away. It was not him, sadly/thankfully but he knows the guys. Crazy!!!

Wow. There have been other instances where planes land at the wrong airport, including ones far too small.

But the Dreamlifter is a pretty special, very large plane, so it isn't like the pilots are going to be run of the mill pilots with little experience in bigger aircraft.

Jabara isn't normally considered a small airport at 6,101x100, but in comparison to the dreamliner it sure is.

I know these guys aren't your normal run of the mill pilots, but McConnell AFB 19L is 12,000x150. You'd think they would notice the runway being half the size of their destination runway. But after listening to the ATC talk, they really don't seem like extremely experienced pilots, both in radio communication and preparation. I'm not sure why they need to ask McConnell tower what the identifier, frequencies, and coordinates of another airport are....that's what sectionals, A/FD, and modern avionics are there for.

Having said that, last I heard they were planning a noon departure out of Jabara so I'm heading there now

It depends on altitude at the time of visualization of the runway. If the pilots are on final at 2500 AGL, they will be much less able to tell the difference between a 6kx100 and a 12kx150. On the other hand, especially with a nighttime approach, one would think that the two flash of white followed by green at the airport would be an indication of wrong place. TWO white flashes followed by green is the beacon you're looking for...

I couldn't tell from the video but I'm sure it was a short field takeoff where they hold the brakes until engine power is fully increased.

The news reporter said it was an empty airplane coming into Wichita to pick up parts, so there was no need to remove payload. They may have siphoned out some fuel but honestly it didn't take up much runway on takeoff. Winds here were 18G26kts and it's 34°F, both tremendously help field performance.

They were planning to keep the extra fuel for takeoff, then dump it over Sedona after they were airborne.

Saw it this morning on the way to work. At first I saw the tail rising up from the south end of the runway as I was approaching on the highway. WTF? Someone really dropped their approach plate and screwed the pooch. Apparently my wife saw "a huge loud plane that didnt look right" last night when she was walking the dog but didn't mention it until it showed up on the news. She said it was low and slow and thought it might fall out of the sky.

The lifter was ferrying Boeing parts from Italy for temp storage at the closed Boeing plant here. KAAO handles corp jets and GA. Uses pilot controlled lighting and is usually dark. Someone landed at KAAO as the 747 was inbound to KIAB and the lights were on on a clear night when they called airport insight and were cleared by the KIAB tower controller.

It had to really be an oh shit moment standing on eveything to get her stopped as the freeway it just off the south end. Then from other folks, I heard the cops were trying to escort tugs and APUs across town and threr was a tug broke down on Rock Rd this morning. KAAO didNt have a tall enough ladder to get to the door so the crew could get out...

They finally got equipment to turn it around and removed fuel until there was only 30 minutes worth and left all the cargo on board. He got off in what looked like 5k worth of pavement. I figured if you can get a B-29 off a carrier, they would do this fine.

With the number of airfields in this metro area, this happens more than folks hear about with transients. Indeed Wichita does have pretty good aviation reporting.

When this one happened they brought in pilots from the mfr because no one really thought that anyone could land or takeoff from a runway that short.:
