Totally amazing 'tinted' old photographs ...

I noticed it brought more humanity to most of the people, and made me hold more sympathy for their plight and situation.:)

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I sure see your point. I'm just seeing it differently. Not meaning to be argumentative.

It was just my personal observation and attempt at explaining how they made me feel.

I expect everyone else to feel a little different.

That is what makes you unique, just like everyone else.:)

Here are some from our Civil War.

There is one where a teenager is pictured and the caption says he was killed 1 year after the photo because he was hit by a cannonball. The B&W of that just isn't as moving.

They are amazing, and I can see their appeal. But after looking at the American Civil War ones (Turtle linked), where some of the daguerrotypes were "cleaned up" by having wipe marks etc. taken out, I wonder where we cross over into "improving" them (as we "improve" models in magazines).

Thanks - maybe because we're used to seeing colour photos now, I really like them and also think that it be=rings the subject 'to life'.

Yeap, I hear what you're saying Wendy and I s'pose it's a bit like digitising old 'gramophone' records... I'm not sure that they has to be a line... provided you reveal what changes were made and have the original for comparison.

She'd prolly let you now.

I've always thought of her as that old lady that collected jewelry and ex-husbands.

"Touching up" pics is nothing new they have been doing it almost as long as photography has been around.. Embellishments, omissions, dodging and burning repainting. I see this as more of the same. neither good nor bad.

Interesting!

I'd seen the original monochrome photo of Lewis Powell before, and thought that it could easily have been taken a century later - he looks like a modern movie star. The colourisation just adds to that impression.

As regards how valid this technique is, I guess these versions are no less 'artificial' than the original photos - after all, we don't see in black and white. Presumably whoever's done the retouching has researched the proper shades for the uniforms and stuff.
