masterrig 1 #3 November 10, 2013 Though nicely done, I tend to prefer the original black and white photos. I thought it was wrong of Ted Turner to 'colorize' some of the old black and white films. I especially like the old sepia photos. Chuck

turtlespeed 226 #8 November 10, 2013 shropshire WOW Here are some from our Civil War. There is one where a teenager is pictured and the caption says he was killed 1 year after the photo because he was hit by a cannonball. wmw999 2,537 #9 November 10, 2013 They are amazing, and I can see their appeal. But after looking at the American Civil War ones (Turtle linked), where some of the daguerrotypes were "cleaned up" by having wipe marks etc. taken out, I wonder where we cross over into "improving" them (as we "improve" models in magazines). shropshire 0 #11 November 10, 2013 Yeap, I hear what you're saying Wendy and I s'pose it's a bit like digitising old 'gramophone' records... I'm not sure that they has to be a line... provided you reveal what changes were made and have the original for comparison. (.)Y(.) MikeJD 0 #20 November 13, 2013 Interesting! I'd seen the original monochrome photo of Lewis Powell before, and thought that it could easily have been taken a century later - he looks like a modern movie star. The colourisation just adds to that impression. As regards how valid this technique is, I guess these versions are no less 'artificial' than the original photos - after all, we don't see in black and white. Presumably whoever's done the retouching has researched the proper shades for the uniforms and stuff.
