LuckyMcSwervy 0 #27 November 4, 2013 kallend Meh, I could do it in less in my Mooney without risking jail, and still get a good night's sleep. I always thought those old fashioned cross country races were romantic. I loved Amelia Earhardt as a kid. Fascinated by her. Still am, I guess. Always be kinder than you feel. turtlespeed 221 #30 November 4, 2013 swisschris62If you were all alone on a dark highway with no traffic coming in the opposite direction then a full moon might help you. The thing is, there's always traffic coming in the other direction with a good share of those people scared of the dark ( even with a full moon). Every time you get on-coming vehicles ( especially those running high beam that won't turn it off) your night vision goes out the window ( regardless how much you try avoiding the light). As for deer...they are every where. I've personally taken out at least a dozen in my 30+ years out here. The deer don't hang out on the highway. The stand along the side eating. There's no predicting when they will jump. It doesn't matter whether you see them or not. Animal chasers ( the things they sell that look like a little airplane engine). It's supposed to emit a sound that will get them running. I have them on the front of my truck...I've got at least a dozen deer, countless armadillos, possum and other little critters that have met my front end. I saw you mention the gps...I'm saying I'd like to see the numbers, particularly the run from NY to St. Louis... I call bs.I mentioned the fuel and did the calculations. Without large tanks, it would be impossible to make good time. The crap about him being able to kill his tail lights all sounds very elusive and like he really thought it all out but...what are we in the 60's? The bears have technology and don't like to be beat. Running through a speed trap, then killing your lights when you see blue lights behind you is a ridiculous plan. You might get away once, but rest assured they are going to come looking for you. Where you going to hide? At a truck stop, full of trucks in a small desert watering hole? I don't think so. Very fun thing to do but now a days you'd need cooperation from the state to some degree or get incredibly lucky. Remember - there is a no chase policy in a lot of places now.I'm not usually into the whole 3-way thing, but you got me a little excited with that. - Skymama BTR #1 / OTB^5 Official #2 / Hellfish #408 / VSCR #108/Tortuga/Orfun
swisschris62 0 #31 November 5, 2013 They still apply the " get on the radio and set a trap up ahead" though...I would think. I don't know how the law reads in each state but I'm pretty sure Arizona,New Mexico and Texas troopers wouldnt tolerate this stuff and would give chase. Depends on the degree of the crime as to whether it's ok for a pursuit or if the cops have to drop off. A speeder or aggressive driver? I only say that (because you drive and see it all), but right after I got my car (and they were still novel), I had a couple of cops, in a couple of Impalas, come up to me, and say, " I know you can probably out run me," and I replied, " Yep, but you can radio ahead and cut me off at the pass." swisschris62 0 #34 November 6, 2013 When you get out into those middle of no where sort of places; you know those areas where your 100 miles from anything...there isn't much risk to the public. There's nobody out there, the next closest vehicle is sometimes 1/2 - 1 mile away from me. You blast past state police in any of the three states I mentioned ( and there's a few more) and they're just going to look at this as a challenge and come after you. They're also going to radio ahead. Your not going to outsmart them. People that don't know any better, go on trips and find themselves on these roads and push their cars to see what they can do. They think they're in no mans land and anything goes. They catch them. I was at the Triple T truck stop in Tucson reading the paper about a year or so ago. Front page article was that Howard sterns side kick robin had gotten nailed speeding out in the desert. Apparently she had rented a high performance Benz and was traveling. They nailed her well into the triple digits and she basically said she was just having a little fun and the way the roads are she didn't even quite realize how fast she was actually going. On the 15, coming out of LA, people rent these high performance cars and head to Vegas. They think they're on a race track out there and do ridiculous speeds. I see them get nailed all the time. Anyhow...I don't doubt the guy could have made real good time out in those states. I see it all the time and I've done my own share of putting my foot into it. I was doubting his NY to St. Louis part of the trip.
LuckyMcSwervy 0 #35 November 6, 2013 I never even thought about the "deserted" areas. Makes sense with nothing better to do and little traffic. TTYTT if I had a high performance vehicle I'd try to see how fast I could go too if I was in a deserted area. My uncle has a Ferrari that I was allowed to drive ONCE after he spent forever teaching me about the gears/shifting. Around here the best place to try it out was the Garden State Parkway going towards Cape May due to it being very light traffic. The funny thing is I didn't even get over 100mph before I got pulled over by the NJSP. The trooper was my cousin so I didn't get a ticket. I've been in freefall hitting 186mph but I don't think I've ever driven over 110mph. I'd love to change that! Just thought of something. My uncle drove the Ferrari all the way from Milwaukee to Atlantic City and I remember him saying how he did 100mph the entire way. He liked to beef up stories so I wonder if this was one of them too? Hmmm... Always be kinder than you feel.

swisschris62 0 #39 November 7, 2013 Not to sound like an old fuddy duddy but I don't really know of any roads to open it up on in NJ. The roads weren't designed for those sorts of speed and there's just too much traffic. That sort of speed can't be judged by other drivers and if someone were to change lanes on you it could mean trouble. Did your uncle clock a steady 100 mph the whole way...probably not. It's not the same as kicking back and doing 70. Passing another vehicle that's traveling at the speed limit looks as if it's standing still when you blow by them in the triple digits. An accident at those speeds whether it be with another vehicle or a mechanical issue has entirely different outcomes then a safe speed mishap. If your going to play make sure your vehicle is up to the task, the road is made for it and no other vehicles are there that could really screw you up. Roads like this one in the picture are perfect. 100 miles of nothing in every direction, damn near perfectly straight and flat, and almost no other cars. I drive all over the state for work and I can't think of ONE road/highway/whatever that looks like that. I think the best you could hope for would be late at night on the NJ Turnpike, Garden State Parkway (south) or the Atlantic City Expressway. It's just too congested a lot of the time. And I'd love to try driving on a road like your picture! Always be kinder than you feel.
swisschris62 0 #41 November 7, 2013 This particular picture was taken on hwy 285 somewhere between Santa Rosa NM and Roswell, NM. About 120 miles of pure nothing....it's absolutely beautiful. About the only thing to see on that highway, other then nothing, which is sometimes the most beautiful of all things to see is one small wooden sign with an arrow. The sign leads you to billy the kids grave site. The sign isn't much larger then a typical garage sale sign. It's not a big fancy sign. If you blink, you'll miss it. On the drive between those 2 towns you'll never run into more then a handful of vehicles, usually just a couple other long haulers. Here's another view from my office....
