vector 3 riser covers

Recommended Posts

i have a vector 3 and i am quite happy with it except for the fact thet the riser covers come loose all the time. the harness was not built for me but fits me very well. other vector 3's i have seen have had the same problem? is this a common problem others have noticed? can i fix it with a rigger or do i have to put up with it?
i am buying a votexii for a second rig and will use that for freefly istead of the vector for safety reasons. i think it is a shame the vector does this as vector is a big brand name and has contibuted heaps of technology to the sport and such a little thing makes me not want to own one anymore![:/]

You may have a rigging problem. Is the reserve the right size for the container? If so, there is probably too much canopy packed in the top of the reserve freebag. This can put outward pressure on the riser covers. I have had good success "loading" the bottom of the freebag.

Have you ever heard of training the riser covers. I have owned two V-III and I had the same problem(and was highly frustrated with the rig and almost sold it) until a sponsored guy from RWS showed me how to train the rig. atfer about two weeks of keeping it trained I have never had a problem with them again.. Training is closing the covers when storing it and folding them down so they are compressed while in storage or even just waiting for the next load. After doing this and making it a habit for a little while you will never have this problem again I promise.. I am not a sponsored jumper but I have owned a couple of them and I actually just bought another one.. I would not have bought another one if what you are experiencing is not easily adjusted..
One thing that alot of people dont understand about these rigs is that they dont really break in until about your 500th jump on them.... at least in my experience.. they are made to last a long time.... I mean i just made my 1000th jump on my current Micron and i can throw it anywhere and nothing comes open no matter what... But it did take training the covers..

The repack of the reserve does effect the secondary riser covers and forces the main covers to open under stress if the repack was crap. You have a legitamate complaint with you rigger and if he wants your buisness again he will fix it without any problem..

i don't quite know what you mean about training them?
can you explain a little better?

i really like the rig apart from this probem. i hang it on a rack every day would thid add to the problem?

thanx:)

Mine was rock solid from day 1. Never had a riser cover open on the ground, in the plane, or in the air. Definitely didn't need to do anything special. It was very stiff for a few jumps and has gotten more and more comfortable and easier to pack (not that it was ever hard to pack) over the 150 or so jumps I have on it, but the riser covers definitely didn't need any breaking in. Does your rigger pack a lot of microns? Do other microns he packs have the same problem?

Hi K2...B|

1) It's mentioned in this thread that RWS does not recommend hanging Vector3s.

2) Packing the reserve right is crucially important. If it's not packed right, the covers wont stay closed. Period.

3) "Training" the covers just means trying to change the "set" on the plastic bits inside the covers. It can make a difference, if the reserve was badly packed before, and is packed well now.

What have you been up to?

What year was your Vector made?

Date of manufacture makes a huge difference.
Let's face it, the first few Vector 3s had a lot of rough edges/ill-fitting parts.
It took the Relative Workshop 3 or 4 years to work the bugs out of that pattern set.
Ghee!
It took Rigging Innovations 3 years to work the bugs out of the '94 Talon pattern set and it took Altico 3 years to work the bugs out of the Dolphin pattern set, etc.
Are we seeing a pattern?

By the time Relative Workshop introduced the Micron, they had worked all the major bugs out of that pattern set, now they are back-loading Micron tricks to the M-series.
