Mythbusters - 4-Way Stop vs Roundabout

Recommended Posts

There are plenty of roundabouts in the countries that I've 'visited'. I've always liked them more, but I also understand that Americans really don't know how to handle one 90% of the time. There's one near a local store and I almost always see the guy infront of me turn left (basically doing a U turn) instead of turning right.

Luckily there's almost never anyone on this road.

There have been circles here for a long time, but no one called them roundabouts until recently. Must be the Europeanizing of America. :o[:/]

Ain't that how America started? :P

There are a couple roundabouts nearby in Superior, including this one built a couple years ago that I pass through every time I go to Boulder: https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Superior,+CO&hl=en&ll=39.928695,-105.165811&spn=0.002842,0.002293&sll=38.997934,-105.550567&sspn=8.338309,9.393311&oq=superio&t=h&hnear=Superior,+Boulder,+Colorado&z=19

I was *so* happy when they got rid of that &)$%*@)*@@!!! traffic light. Initially, there were a lot of idiots acting as if it was a 4-way stop, but eventually they figured it out.

Boulder has roundabouts scattered about the residential sections.

Am I the only one that has purposely gone around the round about a few times just for the heck of it??

A friend once gave me some advice about driving in Paris.

1) Rent the most beat up, clapped out old car that you can. Ideally, one that looks about 5 minutes from going through the crusher.

2) Approaching a roundabout, do not slow down - accelerate.

3) Ignore any right of way and drive onto the roundabout like you really don't care whether you live or die.

Everyone will get out of your way.

:D
Did your friend precise you to apply this strategy for british style roundabout or roundabout "à la française".
Second is rare but not so easy to handle. The most famous is

If you want to cross it, don't be shy

Roundabouts RULE.

To all the people who have hinted that yanks are too stupid to learn how to use them... Rest assured, there are stupid people EVERYWHERE and over here they cope with roundabouts just fine. :P

ETA - I can confirm that in Froggyland, people who hesitate lose their right of way!!! :D:D

Not "just for the heck of it."

Because it's really, really fun in a Porsche. :P

If I can see that there's no traffic coming, then sometimes I will take an extra lap and hang the tail out a little going around.

Your opinion is biased due to your location. For the rest of France, people living in the south east area are 'specials'.
