It's 140am, and the only thing I want is a medianoche sandwich.

Yep. You'll have to move. Give me a call when you get settled. I know 11 or 12 places within about a mile of here. And no matter where you are, NEVER order any sort of Cuban sandwich at a places with table cloths. That's bullsh*t.
Unless it's a vinyl cloth on a folding card table.

What's in a "midnight" sandwich? Sounds like something involving two cheap hookers and a dark alley...

Egg bread with roasted pork, swiss cheese, mustard and pickles. Some places add salami.

Sounds like what they call a "Cuban sandwich" around here.

I don't mean to rub it in, but if I leave my driveway, make a single left turn, and go about 1.5 miles, I arrive at an awesome Cuban restaurant called "Havana" that is open 24 hours! :)
Everything from carne asada to ropa vieja to Cuban sandwiches... Frickin' awesome!!

Good luck satisfying your craving, Grue.

Salami?!! Bloody Aussie heathens! It's slow roasted pork, swiss and ham the way God (or Dios) intended it. In fact, now you've got me craving too. Think I'll stop off at the place right down the road from work tonight and get one with a side of fried plantains.
Not:ph34r: to rub it in.

Don't blame the Aussies, I've had 'em with salami only in S Florida.

I had never heard of a medianoche sandwich til you started this thread, so I had to look them up. Sounds good, but I don't think there are any Cuban restaurants around here either. I could try making one from a recipe, but it probably wouldn't be the same. Well, not that I would know, since I've never had one.

The funny thing is, I had never heard of media noche sandwiches either; but I went on Tuesday afternoon to that Havana restaurant to get a Cuban sandwich. I ordered at the takeout window, then got curious about what else their menu has, so I opened it. There, just below the Cuban sandwich, was the Media Noche sandwich. Sweet bread, pork, swiss cheese, pickles, mustard... Just like Grue described! I started regretting that I'd already ordered the Cuban. Well, next time... :)

Years later, the craving returns.
