Proofread People!

Recommended Posts

More whining about the technology:

I know that a lot of people access Facebook on their handheld devices, and it seems to me that a lot of the applications running on these devices have a spelling/grammar checker that thinks it knows how to spell, (or select the proper word), better than you do.

How many of you are using a handheld device to access dropzone.com? If you are using a PC, do the browsers have a spelling/grammar checker that does this too?

I just read yet another post that contained words that do not even make sense. And I'm not just talking about leaving out one letter in the word.

Can't a quick proofread of your post keep this from happening? Dropzone.com posts include a Preview Post button.

I'm a crap speller but I'm occasionally sort of intolerant about grammar..BUT .. often we're picky about such things and miss the message being passed, which is crazy.

The messages is the important thing.

However, when the perpetrator is a native English-speaker, and the result requires 3 or 4 readings to understand because of its resemblance to word pizza, then maybe proofreading would have been in order...

Hi Gary,

It bugs me, also. >:(

From experience, I will never again use the 'Check Spelling' option that this website offers. Did that once, locked everything up, had to turn off the PC to get anything going again. B|

When posting here I do a 'Preview Post' ~ 98% of the time. But, I am an admittedly poor 'on-screen' reader/reviewer; so I make mistakes sometimes. :P

There are professional writers and English professors who don't always use correct grammar and punctuation. Sometimes people just cannot be bothered. Language is fluid. So long as the correct grammar/spelling/punctuation is there when it really counts, and so long as the message is understood, then who does it hurt? Personally I could use a few less texting short-cuts, like u for you, ur for your, u r for you are, etc. But again, so long as it is properly done when it counts, and gets the message across, all is good.
Why drive myself crazy trying to be normal, when I am already at crazy?

My mom uses the talk function on her phone to send texts. That's convenient for her, but there's never any punctuation. Her texts are so hard to decipher! :S Maybe some people are posting here the same way?

I use that in the car and always put in the punctuation marks.

I use my phone a lot (Android) and it drives me crazy. The problem is that you only have to screw up one letter and the autocorrect changes the word, when you press space, of you type the whole word correctly and miss the space key so it replaces the word with some random shit. Due to the screen layout, you can't always see that it has changed a word, and preview is hopeless. The best solution is to proofread after posting and edit.

Reminds me of an occasion when an ex of mine (who I was with at the time) had been admitted into hospital - her mother had decided she would come down to stay with her once she was released.

I received a text message from a number I didn't recognise which I simply couldn't read. It was full of shortened words with sections of words replaced with numbers. Complete and utter nonsense. I put it down to a wrong number from some chav and ignored it completely. Turned out it was pretty important info from my ex's mother with details about when she would be arriving.

"Text, me, no I didn't receive any text I'm afraid - must have been lost on the wire" :)

Never admitted to her that I'd thought her text had been written by someone with a severe mental disability. Then again, in hindsight the whole family was a bunch of nuts.

Gotta agree with Shroppy... The main thing is that you get your message across...

I personally spend a lot of time proofreading my stuff and trying to be as clear as possible, but I don't expect everyone to care about the same things I do or live up to my "standards"...

***Duuude there are morons who revel in being lazy and not using any form of spell checking OR proofreading. The level of dumb as dirt is palpable. The level of proud of it is epic.

Hi AJ

I resemble that remark.

Oh come on.. you do not even come close to some of the idiocy I have seen on here:)
I look at it this way... If they want to show the world just how moronic they are... who am I to point it out to them. (most of the time):)
