npgraphicdesign 3 #1 September 1, 2013 Any saxophone players here? What's your instrument preference, and do you take lessons, play in a band on the side, jam with some friends at parties, etc.?

yoink 321 #5 September 2, 2013 I used to play the Alto a bit and took basic jazz lessons when I was younger. I pretty much stopped when I moved into a small apartment - it's not the easiest instrument to play quietly!

I pretty much stopped when I moved into a small apartment - it's not the easiest instrument to play quietly! When John Coltrane (who often practiced 16 hrs a day) used to practice at night at home, he'd practice the fingering without blowing into the mouthpiece, to avoid disturbing the neighbors. Just an interesting fyi. Contrast that with Charlie Parker, who as a young virtuoso so antagonized the neighbors with his 24/7 practicing that more than once he almost got his mom evicted from their home.
