Container question....new container if switching from 150 to 170?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

320 jumps (almost all freefly except aff)
4 years
last jump was Fall of 2000

I could call square 1 and get a quick response but this is easier.

Possibly a dumb question coming....

Ive been out of the sport 4 years now (marriage, carreer, house, etc....you know the drill) and am seriously thinking of jumping back in and I am calculating the cost to make the huge committment that this sport requires...

I used to weigh 165 and jumped a 150 sabre with a javelin 2 container.

Now I weigh 175 and would want to jump as conservative a canopy as possible getting back into the sport.

My question is:

Am I going to have to buy a bigger container?

I cant remember If I ever jumped a 170 with my j2 so cant remember about the fit/ difficulty of packing.

Im guessing the answer is going to be..."if a 170 fits then yor fine"

Thanks ahead of time for any replies,
Greaseball

I have a Spectre 170 in my J2. It's fairly tight but it fits ok.

All that needs to be done is to adjust the closing loop length so it's not too tight... you don't want to have both feet on the container pulling as hard as you can if your life depended on it to get the pin into the loop! :P

just curious of your reserve size. I was wondering if you had given thought to upsizing your reserve also. It seems to me that if you are uncomfortable with your main you may also give a thought about the reserve size, too. I know that if I was 4 years uncurrent it would be something I would think about.

Typically, a rig will accept a main that is +/- one size from the original without any problems. Ask your manufacurer though.

You should not have any problems closing that J2 with a 170 (non crossbraced) canopy.

Swaying off the topic, are there even any 170 crossbraced canopies in existence?

Those are airlocked, not crossbraced.

The largest crossbraced I've heard of is the Xaos-21 150.

You may not, but I do. Too tight is infinitely better than just a tad too loose.
